My parents recently decided to move their 1985 O'Day 28 closer to where I live, so I'll be able to use it more. I grew up sailing on it and love the boat, but now that I'll be the primary user (and maintainer) of it, I'm thinking more about the condition of the forward lower chainplates. For quite a few years, there's been a bulge on the deck around where the shrouds attach, and some gelcoat cracking has appeared along the edges of the bulge. I've read through the forums that the forward lowers are attached to a backing plate (probably aluminum) laminated into the deck, and bulging there is not uncommon. My question is whether anyone has ever heard of the bulging worsening into an actual failure, or if it's robust enough to not worry about too much. Also, does anyone have an idea of how much of an undertaking it would be to sure it up, for someone who's handy but doesn't have any experience working fiberglass?
