O'Day 28 faucet repair

Might be purchasing an O'Day 28 depending on marine survey. I noticed the left (hot) galley sink pressurized hot water works great, but when I run the hot water leaks out badlyl from under the handle of the valve onto the counter. If this were my kitchen faucet, I'd turn off the water supply under the sink, take it all apart and take the parts to Home Depot and get some washers and advice on fixing it and then put it back together with new parts. I'm no plumber, but I can disassemble and reassemble things. Can I use that strategy on this boat-sink-faucet? I've never taken apart much boat stuff. Can I get the parts at Home Depot or will I have to get special hard-to-find marine sink repair parts? Seems like it should be the same hardware as my own kitchen sink or similar. Thanks for advising this newbie to boat repairs. dave

you have the answer

you can repair the faucet with parts from HD or any plumbing supply store, all you will lose is the thrill of spending extra $ for a "marine quality faucet." However, when making electrical repairs or additions be sure to use marine grade wire, there is a difference. The marine grade is tinned and will provide years of long life, the home grade wire will not.

U fix

Dave: You can get the stem packing from any plumbing supply store. Just pull the stem and take it with you for the correct size. There should be no need to pull anything below the sink. Oh, yeah; turn off the water pressure switch. Regards, Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron (28 OD)

plans for faucet repair

Thanks for the advice. If anything interesting happens during doing this I'll post it. My plan for later this month is to cut off the water pressure switch, run the water to bleed the pressure out, disassemble the galley sink hot water valve just enough to find the packing, and try to get the parts from Home Depot. That running hot water sure seems nice. dave
