Does anyone have a recommended method for removing the compass from the top of the steering pedestal on an O'Day 272LE? I would like to check the linkage for the throttle control. I have a Ritchie compass mounted on the pedestal.

I have an O'day 31 with Edson pedestal. May not be the same as yours and it's been a while since I removed the compass but as I recall it was just a matter of removing the screws and lifting it out. Not a big deal. Make a mark so you get it back lined up the way it was before removing.

On my O’Day 322, there are a few small screws around the compass that come out (if you have a hood, be sure to check under it for a screw). I think I took out 4.
Then lift the compass up, carefully. Might be a gasket under it.
And be careful with the wire for the light...
You should be able to get to the sprocket and chain once you move the compass aside.

As the others have said, take a philips head and go to it. It just comes right off. On my 272LE, I cut the power wires to the red LED in the compass and spliced in connectors. If you don't have a connector, add one like I did. Make sure you keep track of which wire is which, as the LED won't work if you get them mixed up (ask me how I know).
What's up with the linkage? Why do you have a need to check under there? The adjustments to the cables are on the other end, at the steering quadrant. Tough to get to in the 272 but very doable.
