If you own or have owned an O'day 272, where is a good source for parts? Specifically I need some caps for my water and diesel tanks. Any suggestions welcome.

D&R marine (ask for Rudy) is the best place for O’Day parts. They have the large plexiglass windows, and other specialized parts. They don’t show fill caps.

For your tank caps, almost any chandlery should have replacement caps. You should verify size and threads but they are out there. Even Amazon will have them…you just need the right size.

I assumed there is an ANSI standard to the caps just like bottle caps and nuts and bolts. Unfortunately on Amazon I wound up with everything but what I wanted. The sellers today put every word they can fit on the search profile to make a depth sounder show up on a search for a propane stove or an anchor. I'll pull them off tomorrow, measure and hit West Marine on the way home. The diesel cap is so brittle from UV damage that I'll like destroy it taking it off. Some outdoor Gorilla Tape should seal the opening I hope.

There are different sizes and threads out there. Sorry, I don’t know what the specific size is for the O’Day boats. The PO left me a couple on my 322…but I am down in Florida at present.

You could try calling Rudy at D&R and see if he knows the specific size (and where one could find them).

If Rudy isn’t there, then anyone else can help I suppose. I dealt with him when I bought a new 4-rope clutch to match the one that wasn’t working.

I got ahold of him. He said there are none available anymore. I will try at West Marine tomorrow. If that fails I'll have to replace both deck fills. Probably best anyway since I can replace all that cheap 80's plastic with stainless steel.

Let us know if you find something that fits…

The deck fills on my O’Day 322 are stainless. Only the cap is plastic.

Replacing the fitting can be a challenge…

We changed from the OEM (winch handle removal style cap) to an SS version with a keyless cap many years ago.
All of them: diesel and waster. (our water fill for each tank is via a fill port on the tank top, inside. Praise Be.)
Unfortunately our type of deck fill with an ss rotating-up lever) does not appear in a search now. That said, there are oodles of SS versions that use a standard two prong opener.
What with replacing the old (and probably overdue) hoses, the deck fill replacement may be the easier part of the job.
Not very "technical" work, just tedious. If I can do this, pretty much any patient simian can do it... !
Good luck!

The caps on my 1985 O'Day 31 seem to be an odd size. I couldn't find properly fitting replacemant caps anywhere. I did find a klugy plastic plug that fit at the local big box hardware store and used one of those for a while but it didn't look right and was a bit proud of the deck (I think it was a standard 1-1/2" pipe plug).

One day at a marine surplus/second hand store I saw two deck fill fittings, complete with caps, that looked like the right ones. I bought them both for less than most places just wanted for caps and the caps did fit my existing fills. Not that this necessarily helps you but keep your eye out, you might get lucky. !
