Needing advise - experience - suggestions:
Oday 272 equipped with a 1986 9.9 Johnson extra long shaft and the original lift mount. Boat has tiller helm.
Need to make a "wise educated choice" for replacement aux. power, mount and Controls?
9.9 HP appears sufficient; but, reaching over stearn to shift and throttle has created one to many exciting docking events.
Best Mount:
Best Motor:
Best Remote Control and placement if needed:

If you can find a excellent condition used 2 stroke I would highly recommend it. The ethanol problem has made the 4 strokes such a pain to deal with it isn't worth it. My local dealer recently said Yamaha was recommending on small 4 strokes to run at least every two weeks or to drain the carburetor every time if they are stored for any longer than that. Otherwise the carbs gum up and require rebuilds repetitively. The dealer noted nothing but customer complaints with small engines.
I had a 9.8 Mercury on a Catalina 25 that had controls rigged to a steering pedestal for both shift and throttle. It was set up just like an inboard control system on an Edson pedestal (the pedestal was actually a Merriman).

your oday 272 needs remote controls

i have the same boat and motor with a CMC tilt and trim from cabelas and an old, used johnson sailmaster throttle and shift control. i mounted the throttle controls on the starboard side of the cockpit in front of the gas tank locker. it made all the difference in our sailing experience.

Regarding the fuel issues: run your motor dry of fuel every time you finish for the day. I had carb problems immediately after beginning to use blended fuel, and I learned to run it dry. I use my boat a lot during the season, and I never have idle, stalling, or starting problems.

I shut off the fuel valve or disconnect the line. Start the motor and let it run til it quits. I pull the choke and open the throttle and start the motor again. It always starts one more time! It runs a few seconds at a high idle and then dies. I close the choke and open the throttle and pull one or two more times. Sometimes it will run a second more.

Also, blend a little Startron in your fuel.

I also have a newly acquired Yamaha 9.9, and I would like to mount throttle and shift controls in the cockpit. I will call Yamaha to get the correct parts.

Thanks,

Andrew

A way to defeat ethanol for 4 strokes..

After several years of having to redo my carb on my Honday 2.5 4 stroke, I've found that if I add 2 tbl spns of STP carb and injector cleaner to the tank when I fill it (about 2wice a season) I have no problems at all with starting, idling and running. I don't run the carb dry, I just shut off the motor and raise the bracket. I only sail on weekends, it's very rare I get a chance to get out during the week, so the motor sits for 5 to 7 days that way. The motor starts and runs just fine the next weekend. I'm not sure what the "mix" would be for larger tanks, but I'm sure you can figure out what would work for you too.

I wouldn't suggest you give up the power and economy of a 4 stroke...

I put a Yamaha T9.9 w/ XL shaft on my Oday. This OB has the shifter on the tiller. (Not sure what other OBs have shift on tiller) Even with my high freeboard, I don't have a problem reaching the throttle and shifter. If the shifter was on the OB itself I wouldn't be able to reach it. I also got it with power tilt so I don't have to pull the bracket up to get the prop out of water. I do raise it for OB service.

Thanks everyone for the advise!
Al (Bay City) I did send you a message requesting more Pics of your mounting and controller application. Dave, I believe that you have the correct fact concerning 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke concerns! Keeping my current Johnson 9.9 or possibly going to a few year old Mercury 9.8 - 2 stroke would be a good choice.

Follow Up: Stopped at Cabella's and they were offering a 9.9 Merc. 25" - 4 Stroke, Power tilt. and an oversized Bracket... I think next sailing season will be enjoyable... Procrastination Eliminated...
