Hi fellow O'Day Owners, I just finished my installation of a Flagship Marine 9000 BTU Air Conditioner! The unit also includes an electric Heater. I installed the 60 pound unit in the hanging locker behind the head on the starboard side. I have two exhaust outlets one in the main cabin just inside the chainplate mount and the other in the forward cabin The thermostat is located where the power panel was. I used the starboad laz. to mount the Groco thru Hull fitting, Groco Strainer and Cal Pump! The Heat works great. It takes about 15 Minutes to warm the cabin to 72 degrees in 20 degree outside temps. I can't wait to use the Air Conditioner this Summer. Anyone else out there have Air Conditioning?

We installed a 12,000 btu Mermaid on our 272 three years ago. Maybe it is 4. We are in Wichita, Kansas and it is very hot here. The 12,000 btu will
not cool the boat on a 100 degree date. Mermaid's literature at the time failed to note the fact that too many 4 inch ducts making turns actually
reduces the pressure in the system by about 17 percent at each 90 degree turn.....but it is too late to worry about it now. I can say thai nights aboard are really nice...Our Mermaid is installed under the v-berth. I have one duct to the v-berth and three to the main cabin. I've spent a long time talking to Mermaid about it and there are some things I may try this spring...but I'm not going to totally re-install the compressor and ducts....I'll know better next time.....Mermaid and I exchanged 146 emails before I began the installation and there was no mention of there being an issue w/90 degree turns......The installation looks good though...style points do matter. The Mermaid would not fit behind the head in the hanging locker on our LE.. what type is yours.? Patrick

Hi Patrick, I built a cardboard box the same size as the 9000 Btu unit before I placed my order with Flagship. I used the lower hull liner shelf in the hanging locker and an additional 1” thick Brazilian cherry board extending from the molded-in shelf to the teak oval opening in the teak panel that fits in between the head and the hanging locker. The mounting board was cut to 25½” the inside dimension of the vertical cabin/forward-cabin bulkhead walls and then screwed to the walls. I used the molded-in lower hull liner as a chase to run the 12-gauge AC wiring, Thermostat wires. The Air conditioner/heater plenum points straight up with its vertical exhaust outputs pointing straight into the forward cabin and straight into the main cabin. The exhaust ports are 4” diameter. This installation took me about 11 weeks!

Do either of you have photos of the install? I'd like to see how you ran the ventings and how you routed the tubing to the starboard lazarette? Also how you are both handling the condensation.

Sorry about the error! I meant to write under Starboard side cabin seat. All AC Volt Marine air conditioner pumps have to be installed below the waterline. The AC pump that I used is a CAL Marine 580 Gallon per hour with a vertical lift (head) of 9 feet. I'll post pictures as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

I don't know how to attach the photos on this apple of mine....I do from my office....I don't think the Mermaid would fit on an adapted shelf as you describe...I truthfully did not measure for that and I wish I had...although, the least of my problems were the location of the condenser under the v-
berth. I came out of the Mermaid w/ a 6 inch duct which looking forward comes out the left side. After about 8 inches Installed a two duct dividers (that's not the professional term) and took two 4 inch ducts thru the bulkhead to behind the sink and up thru the vanity where I split the four again to make 2 port ducts into the salon.....back to the 6 incher...I divided the 6 incher twice - the second under the v-berth then up thru the hanging locker to another divider that sent one 4 inch duct to main salon on the starboard, and one four inch duct into the v-berth......just too many turns.
I had sent drawings to Mermaid well in advance of my order and there was never any mention of all these turns just being too much.....What it causes is the unit to have to work too hard to get the air thru the system....My vent
air-intake is installed right under the v-berth cushion the Mermaid 12 x 14 inch vent attached to a 1/4 inch smoked plexiglas, which is attached to the
base of the forward wook bulkhead. Mermaid sells a 1/2 inch line and a brass item called a condensator that automatically removes all the condensation from the pan when the unit is running and sending fresh water overboard......It was the best extra I installed. The pressure of the fresh water running overboard sucks the condensation overboard.... If I were to re-do this I would have just sent 1 6 inch line /duct to the main salon somewhere....the problem was where to find the additional space on the bulkheads, both port or starboard....I have too much stuff on the wall/bulkheads....If you reply with an email address I can send pictures....but we've had this boat 25 years now so it's pretty lived in.....If you want to see pictures of our club, etc. go to www.ninnesch sailing association.com.
It's a fabulous home away from home 9 months of the year....

I thought about using the space under the v-berth. But I was concerned about plumbing both for air and water. In addition my waste holding tank would have to have been removed. I have a Groco HF series head installed in the boat. My condensation drain runs from the air conditioner, under the floor to the blige. I'll try this for a season before I make a decision to try another method. I was concerned with the thru hull drain fitting for the air-conditioner cooling pump that needed to be installed above the waterline to meet ABA specs. I may need to add additional parts in the future as required. Please send pictures to gieler@sbcglobal.net.

Can you check the URL for your club. It is missing a .com .org at the end. Can you also send me photos since I am considering the same project.

Thanks
