Oday 26 and Harken Traveler

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone could help me out? My Oday 26 has a Harken Traveler n front of the companionway. The line that was on it was yellow and very brittle from the sun and exposure. Would anyone know what size and type of line to replace it with? There are 2 lines when I pulled them off the mechanism..

Most likely they were or could be replaced with New England Sta Set or Samson XLS Yatch Braid. Both are polyester double braids at a decent price. You can get higher tech, no stretch lines at a much higher cost.
Try to get the largest line that can fit through the blocks and any cleats. Smaller lines will have enough strength but even going from a 1/4 line to 5/16 will mean a much easier to grab line.
Can you measure the diameter of the old line? Are you near a West Marine where you can take the line in and check it?

When I was looking for line for my 25, I ordered 2' lengths of different size and types. They are always good for something and allowed me to feel the line and check the size.

You can also just give Harken a call and see what they used.

I went to West Marine and got the New England. They were pretty helpful. The first thing they asked s if I was racing? I said no...just relaxing. I video taped how the line came off the traveler so shouldnt have much problem getting it back on. Only question is what kind of knot should I tie to the fixed part of the traveler???

Yep, that is what I would use.
I use http://www.animatedknots.com/ to learn to tie knots and the bowline is very useful. I have never been good with knots, not even when I was a Boy Scout. I relearn the bowline each spring and refer to the Grog Knots app on my smart phone for other knots.

I like to use a buntline hitch tying to hardware. http://www.animatedknots.com/buntline/

It is a jamming knot, so unlikely to slip (as bowlines can do - unlikely in double braid polyester, but still...) and it's also a far more compact knot than the structure of a bowline. I know people who have stopped eye splicing lines, and now just use a buntline hitch. As you can see, it's basically a clove hitch around the standing part of the line.
