I recently purchased a 25 Oday and am in the process of restoring the interior. When I took posession of her, the bolsters on both sides of the hull were in pretty bad condiiton and were stowed in the forward berth. I have replaced the plywood and am now replacing the fabric over the foam.
My question is, since the bolsters were apart and rotting very badly, I cannot figure out how they are mounted and what are the end pieces for. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

I think it is very similar we had the following. A horizontal plywood piece is cut and shaped to fit the hull on the outsides and straight on the inside. This plywood piece is screwed to the top of the pan. We than had a verticle plywood piece that of course has the foam and fabric pre-attached. Holding the two pieces together is a 1"X1" block that is screwed to both. The 1" X 1" block sits on top of the horizontal piece. I do not know anything abount end pieces for ours has none. If this is not clear let me know and I will try to explain it better. Good Luck.

I may have similar backrests in my 222 that I can take a picture of and post it for you tomorrow. I recently removed every piece of wood in my cabin so I could re-stain and varnish. I've reinstalled almost everything back in the cabin except for the Starboard backrest and the galley cabinet. I'm almost certain that the 25s have the same setup as the 222s. A picture will probably give you a better idea of how they are put together. You're probably going to have to screw the knees in place to the back rest before you install the foam and fabric to the back board. then, you have another piece of plywood that screws to the bottom of the wood knees to make up the 90 degree angle. This piece of plywood conforms to the curvature of the hull and is screwed to the shelf. My wife replaced the fabric on the backrests years ago when she recovered all the mattresses. I've also had to do some minor repair to these backrests through the years.

The Back rests...

The backrests were made in a "L" shape with the lower leg toward the hull.
The "L" shaped piece was bolted with # 10 or 1/4" bolts through the half round Fiberglass hull reinforcement that runs athwartships (fore and aft) through the boat. Tha was a bolt vertically. The end pieces were made to support the "L" shape and keep it in position. The larger portion being beneath the Half round reinforcement supporting the "L" shape from tilting into the boat. I have my boat in the driveway and can take a picture if you need it. I am going to remove the bulstered rest and replace it with a 1x8 piece of wood stained to match the cabin. The bulstered rest takes up too much room. It will make the starboard bunk usable and give more room to the port bunk.

This is the bolster from my 86 O'Day 222. If you can bolt the knees to the backboard and bolt it to the shelf in the cabin, it will be a lot stronger. Mine came attached with wood screws from the factory and I did have a few problems with them loosening up over the years, but I had no access to the area under the shelf to bolt it. If you have such access then by all means, bolt it. I hope that I was able to be of some help to you. Good luck with that.
