I recently gained access to a 1977 O'Day 25 that has not been properly maintained in the past. We have been able to take care of most items, but neither the owner nor I have experience cleaning winches. Before I take apart a winch for the first time I would be much more comfortable if somebody could point me towards diagrams or at least post some instructions on how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the winches that came with this boat. O'Day 25 Winches
Brian I also purchased a neglected O'Day 25 and the winches were in terrible need of servicing. My winches are Barients. If your's are the same they are very easy to clean and lube. Under the lip of the winch handle socket is a spiral clip retainer. Using a small screwdriver catch the end of the retained and spiral it off over the handle socket. The drum lifts off exposing the gears and dogs. Nothing should fall out but just in case spread some rags around the base of the wench for insurance. Hopefully you don't have to do this over water. Clean off the old grease and gunk from the bearings, gears and dogs and re-lube and you are back in business. I had never had a winch apart before but found it a quick and easy fix. Brian - As other posters have noted, you likely have either Barrient or Lewmar winches. Both disassemble similarly. Assuming that the winches are one speed, cleaning them is really simple. Even if they're two speed, its not a big deal. I did my two speed primaries without trauma this fall. Go to: http://www.lewmar.com/support_frame.htm to download Lewmar's service manual. It should hook you up. If you find you have Barrients, look at the Lewmar manual then take your winches apart carefully. Lay out white paper towels in case something drops, and make sure you understand where each part goes before you remove it. Then degrease the parts and re-lub them. Brian, If your boat has barlow winches there is a 1/4" hex head screw at the bottom of the handle socket. Unscrew this and the drum lifts right off. Pretty straight forward operation. A neat trick to prevent things from getting away from you is to cut a hole the size of the drum in the bottom of a mid size box. Place the box over the drum and if one of the springs tries to get away it should land in the box. Good Luck PM

Thanks for the reply, Paul. And the cutting a bucket idea is great. Much better than hoping towels around the winch catch everything. Although I haven't been to the boat in the last few days, I am pretty sure it has the Barlow winches. When I take apart the winches, is there anything fragile or anything of concern in putting them back together? Also, is the winch on the mast pretty much the same inside as the main winches at the cockpit? Thanks, Brian

Check the springs
Brian, Hopefully the pawls won't come out with the drum. Before you remove the pawls (2 per winch) check the placement of the springs. This is the only thing that might be a little tricky and it will make it easier to reassemble after you clean them. Yes, the mast winch is the same just one size smaller. This is a really easy job that pays great dividends. Let us know how you make out. PM

Right now the boat is at a small marina about 15 miles from Bellingham, but we are on the waiting list for the local marina. As soon as we move the boat I plan to get started on the winches. The last time I was on the boat the starboard winch pawls were not clicking at all when the winch was rotated. So it desparately needs cleaning, and maybe spare parts. Brian brian.j@acm.org
