My 1980 O'day 25 thru hulls have gate valves. The outside of the thru hull appears to be a white plastic.
I have not touched the gate valves for fear of breaking something.
What do you think? Should I replace with new bronze thru hulls with ball valves? Relace just the valve? or they hold up well and leave well enough alone?

I have two thru-hulls also. One under the sink which drains that and the icebox. It only has a plastic hose barb on it no valve. And then the one for the vanity out the starboard side . I can hear water gurgling in that one when I am heeled over, and sometimes water will get into the sink basin. I have been worried about the one under the sink. That could sink a boat for sure, if that hose came off the fitting. Also according to Rudy at D and R, that is factory and also no bilge pump either! I dunno, if I was sailing in the ocean I would replace mine with bronze. and install a seacock valve.

On my Oday 25 I put in a 1in thru hull with a seacock for the galley sink drain. I put in a T and use the raw water for the head I installed forward to port. I removed the knotmeter under the v-berth, enlarged the opening to 1-1/2 and put a thru hull with a seacock. This I use for the head discharge. Both thru hulls and seacocks are bronze. I removed the v-berth sink and used that thru hull that is above the water line for a bilge pump discharge. The pump is on the stbd side of the bilge. There are vented loops for both the head and bilge pump discharge lines.

Just curious - where do you sail that you can use an overboard head discharge?

I use a potta-potty on the Chesapeake Bay. The boat is going to the Bahamas and will be left down there on a trailer.

When I redid my bulkheads and pulled out the head and sink area the thru-hull for the head sink snapped off quite easily and I replaced it. The one for the icebox and galley sink appears to be metal. I am on freshwater too so I used a stainless one to replace the head sink drain. I would swap it out if you are on the hard, takes about 30 minutes tops.

If you didn't thru bolt, is it just tightened and sealed with a sealant like 3M 4200 or 5200?

No, I used 2" s.s. screws through the three flange holes and into the backing plate I made. If u look carefully at the photo you can see. You can also see that I was off center a "little" bit. Almost too much!

Thanks. Your photos helped to figure it out. I think I may go with the Marelon seacock and thru hull like you did. I like not drilling screw holes through the hull.
