I am looking into redoing the standing rigging on my 1976 O'day 25 (Center Board w/ Standard Rig) My family bought the boat 13 years ago, we had it out of the water for 3 years, and there is no telling when the standing rigging was replaced, if ever. I am looking to get "eye to eye" lengths for all of the stays. Also, I currently have 5/32" wire supporting the mast all around, and I am thinking about upping on size to 3/16. Has anyone done this? If so, did you have any issues finding swage fittings to fit the 1/4" and 5/16" Pins reqired for the chainplates on deck and tangs on the mast?

Excellent Upgrade

Micheal, I have the same boat, same year. Take all the old rigging wire, tangs, eyes to a reputable rigging loft. Talk it over with the rigger. I have 3/16 wire and it is a good upgrade. Take a long good look at your chainplates also and make sure there is no rot in the bulkhead, or corrosion in the steel or bolts. The rigger will duplicate your lengths and the turnbuckles will allow for the stretch that will come over the next few seasons. While your at it buy a Loos rigging wire guage and learn to use it to tune your wire, as the first season there will be more tuning required. Don

Shroud size

Had the same thing done. The chainplates needed to be drilled to fit the pins. The fitting between the chainplate and turnbuckle was sized to the turnbuckle. To make it all kosher would require changing the chainplates to a thicker material, but was told not to worry about it. I think Don is right to suggest having a local rigger make up the new hardware. I had everybody's favorite chowderhead make up mine, and the lower shrouds were only 2 feet too long and the uppers were missing the triangle plates used for mast raising. By the time I had a local fix them, I had paid double.

Shroud Size Questions

Ed, Good to find another person that has done this. To what size did you have the chainplates drilled to? Also, did you do the same to the mast tangs, or did you replace them? Michael Gordon michael@chocolatetruffles.com

Neglected To Mention...

Michael, I neglected to answer your question, re. drilling out the chainplates. Strictly from memory, I believe I drilled them out to 3/8". Just a minor enlargement, and not enough to need to replace them. I replaced the tangs to match the larger diameter wire. Don

Pin Size

I'd wait until I had the pins in hand before drilling. Easy enough with a cordless, a sharp bit and some cutting lubricant.
