O'day 25 spinnaker ideas

I just bought a 25, love it so far. After having re-cored the rotten fore and side deck (personally) she is sailing and enjoyable. A spinnaker was on the boat, along with a pole, and the little clip to attach the pole to the mast. I have the pulleys on the tracks along the cockpit. I have been told I need a uphaul, downhaul, and sheets. What do I need and how does it all go together, especially the up and down haul? Are the sheets to be heavy like the jib sheets?Any other info on this boat is appreciated, including how the previous (one owner from 1976 to 1999) owner managed to never paint the rudder with bottom paint while the rest of the hull is protected. I can't believe he pulled it every trip, especially since I can hardly get it out!ThanksTT

06-23-00T.T.fyi, if you have a symetrical chute you will need an uphaul halyard, hound on the mast, small swivel block, bridle on the pole, quick release shackle on the halyard, two sheets at least dbl the length of the boat plus, port and strb cars on the aft tracks additional to the genoa cars. The dwn haul is desirable for chute shape control requiring halyard to cockpit, another pole bridle, snap shackle, deck block, aft cleat etc. Depending on your spare pieces inventory with your boat the out of pocket expenses should be minimal. If you need to buy all new expect $200. There are may resources like books and mags ie: sail and cruise world distibute a cd rom of article back to 1990 that will answer and illustrate all your concerns.Note if the spin is asymetrical everything is simple, rig and fly like a big genoa attached at two points, you only need the masthead halyard, a 4ft bow tether, snap shackle, and the long sheets,and extra cars. Here you use that pole like a whisker pole. Yes you can fly a conventional spin like an asymetrical.drb on bullwinkle

why extra cars?

thanks bullwinkle, but why do I need extra cars in addition to the genoa? I think I have a symmetrical, but I would fly like monster genoa, what should I use for the four foot sheet, and the long sheet to the back of the boat? a 3/8 line strong enough, or need full 1/2 sheet?TT

06-27-00You can determine if you have an asymetrical sail by measuring from the head to the tack and the clew, if the distance is the same you have a symetrical sail if the tack measure is longer than the clew measure you have an asymetrical.You don't need the extra cars if you have two sets already on the aft track. The extra cars are needed because you will have two sets of sheets leading aft. One set attached to the foresail which is reefed or dropped to the deck and one set attached to the spin. When setting or dropping either sail, you will not want to be rerunning the sheets thru the single car. Dbl cars allows you to set one sail then drop other in the lee. With an asymertical the 4ft lead is attached to the bow plate and the tack, this allows the sail to rise above the bow rail if you have one. Spin are big and when full of air, powerful, the light nylon is easily torn by chaffing on any bow hardware. The long lines; there are two ways to jibe an asymetrical, first thru the forestay and the mast, second out and around the forestay. Outside is usually the prefered method and this is way the extra long sheets (dbl boat length) are needed, depending on point of sail each sheet must lead from the aft, to the bow, around the forestay and aft again to the sail clew. The outside jibe method allows you to sail wing on wing, and set the jib before dropping the spin and vise versa. The inside method allows only one sail to be used at anyone time.DRB Bullwinkle

Addendum to extra cars

Your question on sheet sizes I use the smallest diameter I or the crew will tolerate and handle easily. Usually 3/8 for normal conditions, 1/2 for heavy weather conditions, 5/16 for the spinnacker. Any good sailmaker can make specific recomendation as to brand and composition. Note all my lines are preattached to the sail. If I drop and change sails the sheets go with it.DRB Bullwinkle.
