Hi, I own a Mariner but am looking to buy a 25. Any info. and pros, cons, quirks, idiosyncracies on the 25 appreciated. Any maintenance/upkeep specifics or general problem areas I should look for? Is there a mast-raising system available? Thanks for any advice. Larry

I recently purchased a 1976 Oday 25. My main concern was the deck condition, mainly water intrusion at deck fittings/hardware. I plan to keep this boat for 20? years. I was fussy about the deck as I looked at boats from Norfolk,va to Mystic,ct. I found a 26 that was gorgeous. The surveyor added up repairs to deck including a 2 foot square area by the tabernacle. this boat had soft spots by the one chainplate and the bow area around the anchor locker needed replaced. I stopped the survey at $2400 and only paid a partial undocumented survey. I was disappointed cause I thought I was purchasing the boat that day. many people are unaware of deck core damage. many don't care. many think it's unimportant. this is a problem with most/all production boats. watch tabernacle and chainplate areas especially. make sure the deck area at tabernacle is not concaved from lack of bulkhead support. look for early signs of bulkhead deterioration/rot at chainplate area and at floor level by bilge. this supports your mast! find out if the hinge pin for the centerboard has been replaced or checked as well as the rope/cable assy for the centerboard. see if the transom has been reinforced for engine mount. check for crack/damage at pintles for rudder. see if bilge is dry or wet or has been wet. windows should not leak at all. some people say 'just a little'. Huh? I wanted a newer 26 but after looking at 26s, 27s and 25s from the eighties I finally chose this 1976 cause it met 'my specs'.

Look for water intrusion not only on the chain plates but toe rail and any hardware on the deck. From the cabin look for corrosion on the other end of any of the bolts that hold your hardware. Bulkheads not only rot at the chain plate area if your toe rails leaked you could see some rot on the bottom of the bulkheads. Good luck overall is a great boat.
