Need to find a system to raise/lower mast when my Oday 25 is in the water. Plan to keep the boat in a covered slip. I am looking for a system I can work by myself. Any suggestions?

There's a slew of videos on YouTube under mast raising. One guy raises and lowers the mast on his Catalina 25 to go under a bridge every time he goes out. Also do a search online. I need to come up with way to myself once I get done with my rebuild.

Most of the O'Day 25s had a mast raising system that came with the boat new. If your boat has triangular plates built into the side stays, you probably have this system. This allows you to raise the mast from the bow using the boom for a Gin Pole. The topping lift is connected to the top of the boom, and the Main sheet is used to lift the mast. The boom has ropes tied to the end of the boom which connect to each of these triangular plates and keeps the boom centered. You need to take the rope off one sheave in each block in order to have enough reach for your Main sheet. So with that said, I don't like this type of mast raising. Especially if you have a roller furler. I'd much rather raise the mast from aft, and use a Gin Pole and my boom vang to lift it. The only other thing needed is a mast crutch and pivot bridles. All this can be built. The mast crutch can have a roller built into it so that you can roll the mast forward or aft.

Joe,

The issue with raising the mast from the rear on a 25 or 26 is clearing the hatch. The angle needed toward the stern is apparently greater on these boats than yours. The hatch on these boats is convex to allow for greater standing room below. That upward rounding requires more height at stern to clear.

I have seen one boat modified, to raise the mast base about 2 1/2" with a piece of HDPE mounted under the mast base. I considered doing so, but then all the stays would need extenders, so I have backed off.

However, the balance of the mast during raising would be better your way. Whereas, using the boom as gin pole means it takes two to insert the pin in the base pivot because of the weight overhang over the bow. I am now looking to attaching a support for that issue on my trailer.

Ed,
What you say is true and the way to get around that is to have the crutch locked in a little higher on the stern pulpit, and slide the companionway hatch aft. Then you can roll the mast aft and pin one side to the Tabernacle. Actually, you could use two 2X4's and bolt them together so that they resemble a giant pair of scissors and tie it to the stern rail to use as a crutch to hold the mast. I've even used a small step ladder to support the mast on the OD 25. You do need that clearance though, but you can get it without having to raise the mast tabernacle. I just raised the mast on my boat this afternoon in my yard. I had a few cracks welded at the bottom of my mast and I fixed my anchor light. I also got rid of my steaming light. I want to make sure that everything is in working condition before I trailer her down to the club in a few weeks.

Mast raising.. On my last boat (Catalina 25) I had a 1.5" pipe with 2 pins welded on it to fit where the rudder goes (on the oday it is @25"). At the top I have a roller and apiiece of metal flat stock on each side to keeep the mast from falling off. With a height of @5 feet it gives clearence for the hatch and a roller to allowing reaward slide to align up the first pin. This 5' also overclome most of the load since the mast is already "up" a good portion of the way.*** look out for the vang claw, it can poke a hole in your deck between the step and the hatch****. You will need a line on each side to keep the mast from going off center, the Oday 25 had an option to assist in this and I have a drawing of it I can scan and post, then use the mainsheet for a bloak and tackle PLEASE add an extension to the sheet line so you do NOT run short of line depending on where you are standing. I use dto up and down mast on many boats 2 times a year, easy to do but think first patch second! I can photo the mast raising assist pole tomarrow and repost it as a jpg. Dave Kdssail@hotmail.com

Gary,
A crutch to hold the mast can also be made of wood and attached to your stern rail. Here's one that my friend Wayne built for his Seaward 22. He has a small roller in it that allows him to roll the mast forward or aft.
