O'Day 25 mast mounted blocks advise.

I'd like some advise as to what type block would be best for a mast mounted halyard block to run back to the cockpit. My other boat had a mast step plate to attach blocks to but I'd prefer to do the attachments to the base of the mast this time. So, I'd like some ideas about options: flat base cheek blocks, pad eyes or other options I'm not aware of. I'm really new and ignorant at this and very reluctant to drill anything more than is absolutely necessary. Advise appreciated.

The deck plate is still your best bet. You may have to drill extra holes (4 max) , but you get to re-bed your base also. I see you having to drill several more holes (your reluctance) with any other option. Just my $.02

Swivel shackle block shackled to an eyelet attached to the mast with 4 screws/rivets.
But you will want to reef at some point so it makes sense to run the reefing line back also. Then down the road maybe another line. As Justin said, that mast plate organizer is definitely the way to go.
Do a google search on "Running lines from mast to cockpit". You'll get a lot of pics and several links to forums discussing this.
A search on this site for threads started by me should bring up how I did it on my 25.
That should give you some ideas.

Thanks Ward & Justin
I don't really want to unstep the mast to get a plate under there, facilities and manpower are limited. I'm sure the plate is the best option but I'd really like to have a sound alternative. Do you think an eyelet and block or cheek block riveted or screwed into the mast would hold up to the load of a jib and main halyard on a 25 footer.

Understand about needing to work around not removing the mast. That can be done.
Since you are only asking about the mast block, I think a swivel shackle block attached via a strong eyelet or bail should work.

Chris,
Had to look up mast hound to see the difference between that and a bail. Heard of it but didn't know the difference. Looks like it was made for this situation.
