oday 25 cb taking on water?

Anyone have experience with oday 25 cb taking on water. Cannot see where water coming from. Can center board leak? Can water come in thru showl keel or swing keel? Can water come in thru rope that drops swing keel?

I have a 1980.
First, you have a keel under the boat and a swing centerboard. The CB is separate and the pivot mechanism does not protrude into the bilge.
If the CB leaked, it wouldn't get in your bilge.
The keel would have to have taken a hard hit for it to crack in a way to allow water inside the boat.
You do have a through hull under the sink, which has a valve on it. You should check around the through hull, the valve and hose attached to it. Careful trying to open or close the valve. If it is original it is frozen in one position. Breaking that off is a bad thing.
Are you sure it is not rain water leaking into the boat? If you are on salt water, do a taste test. If not salty it is rain water.
This winter I had the cockpit drain through hull at the stern crack and my bilge filled up.
The drain hose for the forward anchor locker is another place that can leak rain water.
There is a through hull above water for the head sink. If the hose attached to the is missing or came off, you could probably heel enough to allow water to enter.
The tube the pendant is in for the CB could be a source of a leak. Mine has a hose in the middle and I imagine if it cracked or slid up it could leak.
One thing I did to look for leaks is to use a high powered flashlight and examine the entire hull by opening all the storage compartments. That is how I found the anchor locker hose leaking. I could see the shine of the water following the inverted V of the hull when I took out the v berth storage basket and looked inside.
Other leaks I have found have been from the hull deck joint and loose screws around the cockpit storage lockers.

My 1980 O'Day 22 has a chronic problem with water coming up the tube containing the centerboard line. It is most obvious when sailing close hauled with the board fully down.

Thank you for your response. How did you solve your problem? What did you do to stop water from coming in?
I launched my oday 25 at 1300 hrs on Thursday went home around 1600 came back Friday around 1300 hrs and had water over the floorboards. Pumped it out with manual and electric bilge pumps twice and then had 3 inches of water in bilge in 8 minutes. Hauled it out and am waiting for scheduling appointment to have it lifted off trailer to look under the keel.

The Precision 18 is known to have water come in the centerboard pendant tube while sailing. Some have installed a higher piece of PVC glued in with 3M 5200.

However, in your case, a boat sitting at the dock should not take on any water. You have issues. As noted by Ward, it could be a through hull or centerboard pendant tube. You should also check your cockpit drain, which usually goes from the aft of the cockpit through a tube to the transom.

Perhaps when you haul out, if you leave water in the bilge, you'll see it draining back out again.

We had a Hunter 23 in the club, which had a bilge pump and outlet hose right next to the cockpit drain at waterline level. The outlet hose went straight to the pump, with no rise to it at all. When they had 4 people sitting in the cockpit, the outlet was below waterline, and it would take on water. They installed a check valve and had better results. I probably would have rigged a "hump" in the outlet hose, so that water would not normally make it in over the hump, but the pump could pump it out. I don't trust a ball check valve to not get crudded up and deteriorated over time, just like the flapper valve in the toilet always needs replaced every few years.

Consider checking out your lower gudgeon, too. Before my transom replacement (BIG job), those little bolt holes let in an alarming amount of water.
What year is your 25? Centreboard-cable assemblies changed a lot over the production run.

My Oday 25 cb is a 1977. In the 1980's and early 1990's I had a 1977 oday 25 fixed keel on the ocean at Oxnard, Ca so am very familiar with oday 25's except for the swing keel.

Okay, so your cable comes up from the CB case through a tube, angled aft into the cockpit, yes? That's how my '78 is, and it does splash quite a lot while close-hauled; not at all, however, when tied up dock-side. Any cracks in the case/tube joint would be obviously weeping water for a leak of the magnitude you describe.
Do you have any through-hull transducers eg sounder, log, etc? I used to see leaks at the log, and subsequently removed it, but never at the leak-rate you describe.
I'd have to lean toward the under-sink through-hull being the culprit, all other things being equal to my boat.
Raw-water head intake maybe? Do you have one?

Couple of years ago, when I was reading all the threads I could find on the 25, someone was asking about the "plug" they found in the bilge over the CB slot in the keel. It was surmised that a previous owner may have drilled into the CB trunk from the bilge in order to have access to push down a stuck CB. They then put a plug in the hole for future access. So, I agree with Joe to look for 1. failed through hull/valve 2. failed pendant tube or a any other below waterline hole that a PO might have installed.

One other consideration. On my 25, the pendant line has worn a groove where the line enters the pendant tube. I've wondered if it was possible for the line to eventually cut the groove enough to cause a leak although I have not read of that type of failure.
Just another idea for you.

Is this an inboard version of the 25? If so, check the through-hulls for the coolant hoses and all the hose connections. Also, are there any other through hulls (e.g., transponder for depth-finder)? It's good that you pulled it. That's a lot of water to come in in a short period of time.

Good luck,

oday 25 cb taking on water

I have a 75 oday CB 25 that has chronic leaks around the keel in the bilge. It leaks around the rear keel "eyes" and also around the front @ the spar base. Not a lot but I'll have 3-4 inches after a week; or is that a lot? My guess is the leaks are coming from inside the CB trunk. After the boat is launched it takes a few days to start leaking. An air bubble in the trunk that dissipates perhaps? I have slowed the leaks from the inside with StayAfloat leak plug which lasts a season. My worry is the constant inflow of water is weakening the keel connection joint.

I don't know if it is physically possible to reach inside the trunk from below to affect repairs though. My skid limits access.

Kevin,
3-4 inches a week sounds like a lot. First thing I would plan for the off season is stop the leak around the spar base, which I take is the mast base. The deck has a wood core and if that starts rotting the deck will get soft and the mast base can sink. If the wood is still good you can drill the tabernacle bolt holes oversize, fill with epoxy, then drill new holes within the epoxy. That way any future leaks will not reach the wood.
Then bed the tabernacle plate with butyl tape. Check the Musings with Maine Sail forum. He has a very good article on bedding deck hardware.

On my 1980 model I do not see the lifting eyes. Are you sure the water is not coming in the tube for the pendant? There should be no other penetrations from the keel area into the bilge.
As far as weakening the keel joint, there isn't one on the O'day 25. The solid fiberglass keel encapsulates the lead so there is no true keel joint. I would be more worried if there was a crack letting water into the keel around the lead and having it freeze in cold weather. The expansion could cause damage to the fiberglass.

Do a search or look over old threads. A while back, in the Day Sailers forum I think, I guy had a 25 for parts and dissected it when scraping it. He had some good photos showing the inners of the keel area.

Are you sure it is a mix of rain water and salt water? Lot's of places rain water can come in.

By spar base I meant where the wood post intersects with the top of the keel. No water leaking from above, just coming up from below, not near the tube. You can dry out the bilge with a towel and watch it start seeping back in, so it's pretty easy to tell where it's coming from. Sounds like cracks in the fibrerglass either in the trunk (almost impossible to inspect in my case) or on the exterior where the glass is covered with 30 layers of bottom paint. After haul out the keel will weep water for many days.

Looks like I have a winter project lined up.

Now I understand. I agree, you must have a crack in the fiberglass of the keel, letting in water.
Might be a tough one to find.
Good luck with it.
