Hi,I purchased a neglected 1983 ODAY-25 from a mid west sailboat dealer in sept-03,I am now encountering H2O linking through the port chainplate.We found out the port main bulkhead is dry rotted at the top and is now splitting along the chain plate!!ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM.I was a fool not to request a survey prior to purchase.Thank you,Mike O'

bulkhead replacement

Sorry to hear you found it AFTER purchasing. I did the same thing with a 1977 25. If it is spliting and covers a large area your best bet is to replace the whole bulkhead. It's not a really hard job, just time consuming. Do a forum search and you will find a lot of advice on this, It really helped me. I am still working on mine but I hope to post pics when complete.Good Luck!David

Chainplate hole damage to bulkhead

I am in the process of doing the same repair to my 1983 25' O'Day. Your problem is not the bulkhead alone. I bet you have a lot of damage to the core material, which is just under the deck. I own my boat for 14 years, and the chainplate hole has been leaking for a number of years. It actually rotted out the bulkhead and the adjoining head sink area. Through the help of a great fiberglass company in Florida, I did all the repair myself for less that $210. My local shop wanted $2800 for the job. I bought a 1/2" sheet of marine plywood, teak finished on both sides from Jaeger Lumber 800 12th Avenue, Belmar, NJ and a boxfull of fiberglass and epoxy supplies from Fiberglass Coating Company in Florida. 1-800-272-7890 ask for Jonathan.
