I need to set up a vang for my 26. Can you tell me the size of the boom bail for the mast and the boom?

Thanks,

John

Rudy has three different sizes of boom bails for this boat. Maybe it depends on the make of the spars, I don't know.

My friend Ray has an 86 O'Day 26 with a boom vang fitting that will take a vang with a special type of swaged ball on a short piece of stay cable connected to the top of the boom vang. Personally I don't like this set up because it can render the boom vang useless for other applications but I may be wrong about that. It depends on how it's attached to the vang I guess.
I use my boom vang to raise/lower my mast, so it can serve two purposes.
I would buy a bail that would fit the boom and bolt it with a 5/16" bolt. As for the mast attachment; almost anything can be used. If the bail doesn't fit, it can be bent and made to fit.
My boom has these special heavy duty eye straps that fit into a groove in the bottom of my boom. Some of them were just floating free when I bought the boat. I only needed to figure out where to place them on the boom and then I had to rivet them in place.
The bottom of my tabernacle has a utility plate with holes in it for attaching sheaves and also a vang but I had to cut the rear part of the plate because it was interfering with mast raising. Lately I have been attaching a 5/16" rope to the rear holes in the sides of my plate in place of an attachment point for my boom vang and it works just as well.
So I would go with a U shaped bail that will fit the boom and bolt it in place. Just make sure that whatever you use for the mast doesn't interfere with mast raising.

Joe,

I have the vang already, it's like yours so I'll just go with the U shaped boom bails on both the mast and boom. I did see the 3 Rudy has, not sure which ones I need or if any 3 will fit.

John,
I was at the club today and had my camera with me so I took some pics of Ray's O'Day 26 on the trailer.
He has one of those round ball type boom vang fittings for his vang, but he also has a U shaped type bail for his mainsheet attachment.
He has some kind of a funny looking attachment on his mast for the boom vang. I also took some pics of his mast raising/lowering triangular plates on his lower stays. The plates appear to be the same size as the one that I had on my backstay years ago for my mainsheet to the end on my boom. You could use almost anything for the boom vang including the small pad eye that Rich uses.

Thanks Rich and Joe.

I have a good idea of how I might set it up now. Do either of you recall the distance from the front of the boom to the boom bail?

I'm guessing just a few inches up the mast on that end?

I think the vang has to be at a certain angle like 45 degrees but I'm not sure.

Right, 45 degrees or about 30% of the length of the boom.

While you're at it, if it doesn't have one, install a organizer plate from Rigrite, not the one Rudy's selling.

That's where I got mine. My utility plate is exactly like the one pictured. It's made by Kenyon. I had to cut the back plate off mine because it was interfering with my mast raising. The top half of my Kenyon Tabernacle was hitting it and preventing my mast to pivot down low enough to sit in the mast crutch. I hated to cut it because I was using it for my boom vang connection. I've been tying a rope to the side plates and using that for my vang. Maybe I'll install something on my mast like Ray has on his mast.
