The keel on my newly purchased Oday 24 doesn't seem to want to extend. Can someone tell me any tricks to unstick it..? Pry it out with a screwdriver? or take the boat out of the water..? All advice appreciated! TIA

Popular Topic!

You will find lots of information on this site about this topic! Just do a search of the archives - all the suggestions are there, and they are too numerous to list here! As info, the CB is stuck up on my 1972 O'Day 23, and it still sails just fine! But I am going to get that thing down one of these days, using some of the suggestions offered on this site. Welcome to the 23' Club! Bet you're going to have a blast with it!

stuck cb on O'Day 23

I have had this happen several times when grounding on a shoal. The painter/line which pulls the cb up gets wedged between the housing and the cb which jambs the cb in the up position. You will probably have to swim under with a good stout bar and pry it down against the rear edge of the opening. I have bent boat hooks doing this before. It just depends upon how jambed the cb has become. Good sailing.

#9 wire

i put epoxy on the center board , you guessed the rest. any way i used a loop of #9 wire and caught the top(aft) edge of the board and with a crow bar popped the board down. no problem and no nicks or scratches on the board. good luck.

Stuck centerboard

I have a 1973 OD23 with a centerboard cranking post (the table attaches to it). I keep a 4 ft. long (approx) electrical grounding rod (about 3/8" dia.) on board for just this problem. Take the cover off the post and put the rod down the post and tap/nudge the CB free. Any steel rod will work but the grounding rod won't rust. They are available at Home Depot in 8 ft lengths. JT

Fixed it!!!

Here's what I did. Scuba mask. Chisel, long handled channelocks as a pry-bar. The CB apperaed to be stuck on the stbd side to the slot it fits in. I used the chisel to pry it loose form the side and after several attempts heard a loud "crack" which scared me. Then I took the channellocks handle and used it to pry the CB down. After a couple of tries it came down quickly! Now it works fine! Thanks to all who answered!
