About to buy a 4 stroke 4hp long shaft for my new boat. Is this significantly underpowered for the 23?? Heading down there now so any quick responses would be appreciated! Thanks

Depends on the conditions. I have the same motor; great on an inland lake, but may be to little in a tidal current or in a chop. Others have recommended 6hp or more with an extra long shaft.
Thanks. I ended up buying it anyway. Need to transport boat as soon as possible so ill give it a shot! Maybe upgrade for next season after my complete refit.
IMHO a four will be too small in tides or a seaway on the 23. A six should be ok, an 8 plenty, and a 9.9 is as big as you should go.
Kinda late but.. I have a 6.6 Seahorse on my 23. Works perfectly with the sail prop on it. Takes a bit to get going and needs a good shot of throttle to get her stopped again but once under way its great
