HI everyone, First, I am new to the site and I am glad I found this site! I am thinking of a Oday 23 as a trailor sailor, my concern is can it be easelly launched from a public ramp? Also mast raising concerns. The Oday 23 I am looking at is a 1979 so it has cabin maststep not the keel mast step. Any reply would be welcome, thnak you. I intend to use the boat as many weekends as possible to sleep over with friends etc. kinda of camping on the water, idea. A bit of background information, I sailed many different boat race a few more the closest think to the Oday would be a J24, no problem for trailoring, mast raising etc., but it needed to be launch with a crane so I never launched form a ramp!. THX, A.

O"Day 23

The mast can be steped easily by two persons and can be launched from an ordinary ramp. Takes me about 1/2 hour but that includes a lot of other stuff. I've had mine for about ten years and have no desire to change. I sailed on Lake Champlain for about four hours today.

Alain, if you have not purchased a boat yet -

I doubt you will find a 23 in better shape than this one: http://jmeister.com/sailing/23forsale.php I met John when we were looking for a boat, and he is meticulous about his boat work. Good luck - I think you will enjoy an O'day - we're on our second one! Scott Fuller Milwaukee, WI

A heavy boat to tow

I have a '79 Oday 23 and have been very happy. I don't trailer the boat, but I can see that she would be a handful; this is a heavy boat to trailer. You will need a full-size pick-up truck with a towing package. fyi, the boat Scott id'd in the previous post looks like it is in great condition. however you should note that the pop top model is very different than the '79 version. Ignoring the obvious lack of a pop top, the interior layout of the '79 is different. Also, the stub keel of the '79 is integral to the hull, not bolted on. Also, the centerboard is raised and lowered from the cockpit, unlike the pop top models which had the centerboard raised from a winch built into the salon table's center leg.

another reason to stay away from....

...the keel mounted "convertibles" is leaking. I have not seen or heard of one that does not leak water where the mast goes through the deck.

Ezeloader is the way to go!

Alain, I tow my 23 on an ezeloader trailer with a Ford Econoline van conversion. I love the rollers on the ezeloader, I don't have to put the van in the water to launch or retrive the boat. I live in the foothills of the Sierras and have pulled this boat up some pretty tall mountains with no trouble although my van is equipped with the heavy duty factory towing package. I can roll down the freeway at 65 with no problems too....I would strongly suggest the ezeroller trailer as the way to go...

We have an 80'

O'day 23. My trailering is confined to the 60 miles between home and the marina. I added a 12' tongue extension that allows me to launch and retreive the boat myself using an F-150 1/2 ton p.u. Setup takes about an hour for us. It should be less but since we only launch in the Spring and retreive in the Fall we're not very efficient. I do plan to trailer it next season. It pulls easily behind the p.u. with the tow package on it. Anything smaller w/o a V8 is going to be pushing it. It sits higher on it's trailer than the traditional swing keel models so launching can be difficult if ramp angles are shallow. Raising the mast is simple. We use two people (no gin pole), and the mainsheet block and tackle to step and unstep. I honestly wouldn't use the boat as much if I had to go through the L&R everytime. I can be away from the slip in fifteen minutes.
