I have finally gotten a chance to sail my '81 Oday 23 a few times and I have this feeling that the tiller is awkward or not original. Does anyone have any photos, specs or information concerning tillers for this boat? Also, has anyone every reversed the main sheet blocks so that it is run from the top (boom) end? Thanks,Tim

Tillers

I have two tillers for my '79 O'Day 23, and I don't think that either is original. They are simply slightly rounded, straight, solid sticks of hardwood. One I keep as a spare and is weathered silver, and the other I sand and varnish. My tillers are about the same size as those for other 22'-24' production boats. If you want a nice looking (highly varnished, alternate layers of different wood), curved and carved tiller, you could buy any of the replacement models for a Catalina or others, and simply shape the stock to fit the O'Day rudder fitting. Its nice to have a curved tiller , as you can push it hard over away from yourself without banging into the knees of someone sitting directly across from you. The replacements are not all that expensive, and are available in stock at the West Marine near me, and certainly through their catalog. I also saw that Defender had a large selection from their catalog.
