has anyone installed a mastendr hinge in their mast? i need to be trailerable.if i cant hinge it, i will sell my 1972 23 poptop and keep my 1973 22 oday. any thoughts?
I think that it can be done but you wouldn't be able to use your pop top. It would involve cutting your mast and making that short piece permanent with a mast hinge attached to it on top of the cabin. You'd need the mast plugs for both halves of your hinge if they are available or have the plugs made up special. Mast plugs aren't available for my mast because the company went out of business.
I talked with the mastender people about doing this, they do sell the hinge seperate (no conversion "kits") but a keel stepped mast is a requirement to add the hinge, won't work with compression post style..
Then you can put the hinge above the open pop top or even above the boom if you choose...
I didn't get as far as cost, I/you'll need to send a full size "cross section" drawing of your mast to them as they only have three sizes of the hinge assembly available..
If they are providing the two mast plugs and a utility plate with the hinge, it's reasonable. You don't really need the utility plate but you do need the two plugs that will fit into your mast in which each half of the hinge can be bolted to. Each plug is held in place by machine screws or rivets through the side of the mast.
