I just bought a 23 with out a motor I have been using a seven and a half short shaft witch works fine in lite chop and 15 knot wind. I found five and a half honda. Is it too small for the boat and lake Huron?

Oday 23 Outboard

I have an Oday 23 with a 9.9, long shaft Johnson (Sailmaster). In winds over 15 knots, with alot of short chop on Narragansett Bay (waves about 2-3 feet) I need every inch of that long shaft and every bit of that horsepower. As I go over one wave, the stern lifts and the propeller will come out of the water and cavitate. It would be worse with a short shaft motor. As for horsepower, I think 5.5 is way to low a horsepower. 7.5 would be a minimum. 9.9 is optimal. Full throttle, battling wind and waves, I can do about 4knots.
