I have an O'Day 23, 1983 edition. I have seen listings for O'Day 23's, model 2 ? For those of more experience with these ...... how do you tell the difference between a regular 23' and a 23'/2 ? Thanks in advance.

I am not an expert, but I know some of the differences- it was a progressive change. Mark 1 were earlier boats. cast iron keel, centerboard line inside cabin,cabin table on starboard side drops to make bed, no anchor locker on bow, most had no rail at stern, some had cut out to mount outboard some used bracket.Available in fixed cabin top, fully liftable cabin top and also a small pop top over companion way. Shrouds mount to outer hull edge. Mark 2 were later boats. Lead keel, smoother operating centerboard line exits under companion way in cockpit. Bulkhead mounted cabin table on port side, some had anchor lockers in bow. Nice stainless rail at stern. Out board motor bracket on slightly deeper transom felt safer in following seas.Shrouds mount to deck and pass through to bulkhead. I have been in both types and the mark 2 feels bigger inside and more user friendly to me. Hope this helps. There are many other small differences. 1971-74, 1977-84
This is an edited version of an old e-mail message of mine that got posted on the I heart O'DAYS site; 1971-73 (either #1 or #2) 1974-5 (#3, and maybe an updated #2?) 1) pop-top, this model is the one where the whole cabin trunk lifts up on struts like the top on a "pop up" camping trailer. I think there were canvas curtains to connect the raised top to the deck for privacy and weather tightness. This model also has the mast stepped thru the deck, the cabin trunk raised around the mast. 2) a standard cabin trunk model, this one obviously had a solid cabin structure, no pop-top section, and I believe a deck-stepped mast with a tabernacle (hinged mast step). Because of problems with sealing the joint between the cabin trunk and deck, as well as the fact that the thru-deck mast set-up was both inconvenient for trailering, and a source of leaks in the rain, O'Day dropped the version that raised the entire cabin trunk. This model was replaced in 1974 by another pop-top design, (#3) which like the Ventures and the Catalina 22 (and later the C25), only lifted a portion of the cabin top. This model had a pop-top that lifted the portion of the cabin top that stretched from the aft bulkhead to just aft of the mast, only the cabin top lifted, no part of the cabin trunk moved. This gave standing headroom for the main part of the cabin, but still allowed the mast to be stepped in a tabernacle on deck. From a distance versions 2 and 3 would be hard to tell apart, unless the top was raised. Version #1 is easy to spot from a distance, even if the cabin trunk is not raised, because of the very different shape of the cabin trunk. It was more angular and boxy than the fixed-top or later pop-top. The companionway was also ofset to port on these early pop-top models. These models should not be confused with the later (1977-1985) O'Day 23 which never had a pop-top option. Also, the early O'Day 23 had an iron keel w/ fiberglass CB, where as the later 23 had a molded-in keel (lead ballast) with fiberglass C/B. The later 23 for a while also had an optional fin keel. I've never heard of the later (1977-85) 23s being called a "Mark II", but then I suppose it would make sense to differenciate these boats from the earlier ones to those who were unaware of the years each version was built. Does anyone remember if O'DAY made the pop-top the standard version for 1974-5? I'm embarassed to admit that I really don't remember if they built both a pop-top and a fixed top, or just the pop-top (#3) in 1974-5!
