ODAY 23 DECKLEAK

I'VE HAD AN ODAY 23 FOR 3 YEARS, A GREAT BOAT, BUT I HAVE A DECK LEAK THAT I'VE BEEN CHASING THE WHOLE TIME.IT SEEMS LIKE IT COMES IN AROUND THE PORT SIDE CHAINPLATE, SOAKS THE TEAK PLYWOOD BULKHEAD, AND FILLS THE BILGE WITH A COUPLE GALLONS OF WATER AFTER A HEAVY AND PROLONGED RAIN. I HAVE CAULKED EVERYTHING ON THE PORT SIDE OF THE BOAT (DECK FITTINGS, TOWRAIL, WINDOWS, TEAK RUNNERS FOR CABIN TOP SLIDER).DOES ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVE ANY IDEAS!PLEASE CONTACT: SEASIDESHIRL@GREENNET.NET

Deck leaks

Greg -First thing I would do is go get some powdered chalk of the type that you fill a surveyor's chalk line with. Put a bunch of it in the spaces around the chainplate - then after it rains see if the water turns blue. Remove anything that might be stained from the path of the water!If it isn't the chainplate, you can try the same thing with other fittings.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Leaking Thru Your Chainplate Needs Attention!

Warning - if you have a deck leak thru your chainplate fitting onto your bulk head needs attention. If your bulk head rots, the chain plate strap could be pulled thru the deck (and you can figure out the rest). Water can seep into the end grain of the bulkhead which is teak veneer plywood. I had the same problem and could never seem to solve it (had to annually re-bed the plate at the deck). Finally removed the chainplates from the bulk head. Cleared out the rot in the deck coring where the chain plate come thru. I dabbed epoxy on the endgrain on the top of the bulkhead and bolt holes. Best way to stop the leak after remounting - bed the heck out of it under and top of the plate with good quality marine silicone.
