Greetings to all. I've just purchased an all but new 1984 O'day 222 with trailer. My problem is, I'm suspect of the tires. They don't look like trailer tires. (they almost look like the old glass belted type, wide & soft) Does anybody know what type or size of tire goes with a Shoreline single axle trailer for this boat size. (GVWR 2800#)
Thanks in advance.

Figure out how much load is on the tires- trailer+boat- and check the load rating for the tires.

Jack,
Congrats on the O'Day 222! I have a 1986 O'Day 222 that I bought new at the Boston Boat Show back then. A lot of the O'Days, 192,222 and the 240 came with single axle Load-Rite Roller trailers. My trailer was a Model 19-2500S and it had two H 78-15B tires. The GAWR was 3,175. If your Shoreline has rollers, including a rack of four 12" keel rollers, that boat should practically fly off that trailer. Mine did. You only need to back down till the water is up to the wheel hubs. I had to add an extra roller on the last cross member of the trailer to prevent the bow from hitting this cross member. Maybe the shoreline doesn't have this issue. My Load-Rite bit the dust a few years ago and I went to a Long Mfg. tandem Aluminum trailer with 14" tires and bunks at a GAWR of 4600 LBS. Good luck with the boat Jack. I know that you're going to love it as much as I love mine.

Congratulations Jack. When I got my 1983 O'Day in March it came with a single axle Load Rite with old dried out and cracked tires. I needed to haul my boat 246 miles to Cade Cod from western Connecticut and there was no way I was going with those tires. They were F78-14ST which was standard biased ply trailer tire back in the day. Trailer tires need a stronger side wall than passenger car tires because they are likely to get damaged hitting curbs and rocks, etc. You can still find F78-14ST but not easily. The equivalent trailer tires today are radial biased 6 ply 205-75R14. I paid $79 each installed at the local tires shop which was especially nice because the boat was still on the trailer. The radials tires have a side to side motion that can be a bit disconcerting when towing a high speeds. Once I got used to sway they handled very well and are noticeable quieter. I also wanted to add a spare tire mounted on the frame. I found the exact same 205-75R14 trailer tire mounted on a rim at the local Tractor Supply Co for $110 and the trailer mount fit was another $30.

My boat ‘Greta’ is pictured below ready to launch for the first time in May at Wellfleet Mass. I’m loving Greta and I’m sure you enjoy your 222. BTW I found Greta for sale on Craig’s List, how did you find yours?.
