The original hand pump on my sink is not working. The leather gasket around the pump shaft has come apart. Does any one know how I might repair this

Replaced mine

John, Mine was dead when I got the boat. A previous owner had left water in it during the winter and it split the metal pump casing. I went to Boat U.S. and replaced it with a generic plastic version which works fine. By the way, you may want to look at the plastic hose that connects to the water supply. Mine was pretty gross and so I replaced that at the same time. I now run bleach through it at the beginning and end of the season to keep the water tasting ok, and I take the pump out of the boat for winter storage. Good luck. Dave s/v Hakuna Matatta O'Day 222

i'm too cheap

my previous owner must have done the same (split pipe). however i'm so cheap i just but a thin layer of epoxy and a hose clamp to fix the problem. For the leather seal i would cut one out of an old pair of shoes. told you guys i was cheap. could you answer a question of mine ? do you raise the mast from the bow or the stern ? thanks bob

Hi neighbor! I just pulled mine out because

it was sticking badly when I tried to pump it. It sounds like the seal your talking about is under the packing nut? Any hardware store has Teflon packing "string". Just wrap enough around the shaft to fill the space under the nut and when you tighten the nut down it will compress into a single mass. After I clean mine up I'll be doing the same but much to do before that. Watch those chainplates! It was a tough job this spring to replace 12" of core around my starboard chainplate. Prevoius owner did a nice repair job just covering up the problem! See ya on the Sound!

Seal under packing nut

You are right. It was the seal under the packing nut. I crammed the material back into the nut and tightened it down. It seemed to seal well, but the pump still won't draw water. I checked all the hose clamps and connections and they seem good. When I pump little puffs of air come out of the faucet, but no water. Do I have to prime the pump somehow. It hasn't been used in years. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem.

get some fawcet grease

and spread it around in there. You might not be getting enough suction and your backflow seal may be shot, like mine is.
