I decided to become involved in our club's races this summer. I raced for the first time in many years in opening race, The Icebreaker, in mid-May. For that race, the 222 was assigned a Portsmouth rating of 97.3. The current US Sailing Portsmouth list shows the 222 with a rating of 98.3.
If you wouldn't mind, would you share the rating assigned to your 222 by your local clubs? The 97.3 sounds low (fast) to me, particularly since I've learned that the boat has a O'Day 22 mainsail, the foot of which is 1' shorter that the 222 sail, and just under 10% smaller.
I'm not sure how the 97.3 was arrived at. The prior owner stated that he recalled the rating being around 99 when he was racing the boat 5 years ago (in the same club).
Any numbers you can share will be appreciated. I am planing to initiate a discussion with our club's "handicap" guru, who to, to the best of my knowledge, was involved in assigning the 97.3 rating.
Thanks, in advance.
