O'day 222 Jib/Genoa

If im reading the original brochure correctly, these 222's came standard with a roller furler? New to this stuff, I been searcing, trying to learn it all...

I dont have anything forward except a common head stay. If im understanding this all correctly, the furler is a tube, fit over the stay, and the top section, and lower drum/roller section, fit into the tube and rotate around the stay??

In the interim, would I just hoist it with the Jib halyard, attach the tack to the hardware near the stay, and take the sheet back to the winch tackle?

Where is a good place to find a furler, or furler parts I could put together myself, for a guy on a budget?

Sounds like you have the basic idea. Definitely sail the boat with the hank on sail till you get the rest figured out. There are plenty of different furling units that will fit your boat. Some expensive some not to high $$.
Hook up the jib halyard then all the hanks and the attach the Tack then Hoist it with the Jib hayard after running the sheets back to the winches.

Might check the O'day and Macgregor owners forums for home made furlers. Also google it.
People have made some pretty good systems out of PVC pipe and a few fittings.

The Schaefer SnapFurl CF-500 system is around $600, but also remember if you are going to use a furler then you're looking at the $$ of getting your sail luff modded to fit the foil as well as getting a sunbrella sun cover put on your headsail so that it doesn't get eaten by the sun. That all adds up quick.

Another cheap/easy option for the headsail is to get a jib bag that stays on deck and attached to the headstay -- you lower the sail, stuff it in there and don't have to take it off the hanks every time, or take the sheets off. Not quite as nice as furling, but much cheaper and less complicated, and it frees up the interior space that your headsail would have been occupying.
