Hi Folks. New Oday owner of a '86 222. In need of a water tank since its not in the boat when I got it. It does have a fitting in the locker but no tank.

Should I replace with another OEM style tank or collapsable/flexible water tank? If so which kinds/models would you recommend?

Also how large was the OEM? How many Gallons?

The original tank was a 5 gallon tank, and I don't think that they're available anymore. You might get some info off Rudy Nickerson, D & R Marine about what is being used in place of it http://www.drmarine.com/ Rudy sells O'Day parts and is very knowledgeable about these boats having worked at the O'Day factory in Fall River Ma., many years ago. Parts for the galley pump can be purchased at IMTRA in New Bedford Ma.

Someone else asked about this same water tank last year on this forum and I posted some pics of mine on it. You may be able to look back in the archives and find it. There's a lot of info on the manufacturer. My tank has a filler cover on one side of the top of the tank, and also a smaller threaded fitting on the other side for the galley pump hose, screw type connector. There is a long plastic tube with a round flange on one end which allows the galley pump to suck water from the bottom of the tank from the top of the tank. This hose is removable but is needed to make this work. A small cover is attached to the tank for use when pulling the tank out of the compartment for filling. I have pictures of this in the O'Day archives.
Maybe Ed. K. can find them for you and post them on this thread.
Ahoy there, Ed K. What say you?

Zoomie,
Do you still have the screw type connector on the end of the hose coming from the galley pump? This is the one that screws on to the small threaded fitting on the tank. If you still have it, maybe you can make up a plastic hose with a flange on one end and try to find any kind of a container that the hose fitting will thread on to. I'm sure that if it works, and I know that it will, it will work on any plastic water tank that you can buy at West Marine. You may be able to buy a special hose with a flat washer type flange on one end, or Mickey Mouse something. I know that there's a lot of ifs but it's worth a shot. In order for the galley pump to work, there has to be water in the hose, or sometimes you may need to prime the pump by putting your finger over the spout while you pump. The hose shouldn't be any longer than what is needed. So if you replace the hose, make the new hose the same size. If you make it too long, it may not pump too well. Do you still have the pictures that I posted last year of the tank? If so, would you post them on this thread for this guy? That way he'll know what is needed to make another tank work for him and I'm sure that he will share his findings for others if he is able to come up with something that will work. Even if you don't have that fitting, I bet that one could be made up to fit a water tank from West Marine or some other boat store of your choice.

Yes mine still has the threaded connector for the tank. After doing quite a bit of research I think it will have to have a pick up tube for supply and/or supply at or near the base and be vented. All the options I've looked at either would be extremely expensive, impractical in use (installing filled, and removal) or just wouldn't fit the factory location in the bow (too tall, generally). I never contacted Rudy (which is what I should have done first) but after I do I'll probably just hope something crosses my path in the future. I'll check for the photos!

I used to use my galley pump quite a bit and I still use in to wash my hand. I've found that the five gallon tank really isn't large enough to meet my needs as far as dish washing, rinsing, and other things needed for cooking. So I carry a 7 gallon water can plus two gallon jugs of water for coffee, or for heating water for dish washing. I also carry 2 1/2 gallon thermal jug with ice water for drinking water. For rinsing my dishes and a fine cool mist spray on a hot day, I bought a new plastic pump type weed sprayer which holds a gallon of water. So now I don't need to refill that five gallon water tank as often as I was doing which is a pain in the butt. Most people don't want to drink out of that thing anyway. If you can find a container that will fit in that area of the bow, the boat will balance a lot better, I think. It's nice to have the galley pump and be able to use it, but I've found ways to get away from having to depend on it for all my water needs.
