Hello all. This is my first post although I have been following the site for awhile.I have a 1976 Laguna Yachts Windrose 18 which I restored from a neglected condition. Nothing really major but just about everything needed minor structural or cosmetic work. Ended up with a really great & fun boat that our family has enjoyed for three years now. However....
there is this Oday 22 (1976 I believe) that has been sitting neglected in a field not far from our home for about 6 years. It was covered for 4 of those years until the tarp shredded in a storm. Asked the owner about it once --- not for sale. About a month ago the boat was moved out by the highway with a FOR SALE sign, price--$3000. The hull appears to be in good shape, running & possibly some standing rigging will need replacing,no outboard, interior needs alot of work (no cushions, wood berth covers missing), good dual axle trailor.Sails and other gear looks like its all there and usable. The owner obviously doesn't care about the boat because the main hatch has been left open for over 3 weeks and we've had several inches of rain so i'm sure it's flooded inside. Needs most ot the same stuff as the Windrose did so I know I could do the work. I Know these are good boats and am thinking about rescuing the poor thing and I guess am just looking for input
on the Oday 22, the possibility of hidden damage caused by the water inside, and exposure to the elements. At $3000 I would turn & run but would offer much less and see what happens.

Thanks for any input anyone may have. Have a great day! ----Mark

I would walk away. There are just so many boats out there right now that need very little work for $3K. Even if you talk him down, you could end up with a mess that drains you of funds that you will never get back unless you complete it and do it for little money.

I like using allofcraigs.com Put in sailboat and then let it search all craigslist ads nation wide. You can then sort the ads by state. You end up with everything in your state and neighboring states. There are just so many good boats out there right now.

If it were gifted to you, it MIGHT be a good deal but you can probably find one that you can sail hme for 3 grand.

You Can Do Better

I bought a 1979 O'Day 22 last year with a good 8hp electric start motor and a good galvanized trailer for $2500 and could have probably talked the owner down some more. The boat is in good shape and was sailable the day I bought it.

I'd walk away from the boat you described and look around for a much better deal.

Thanks for the advice everyone. You all are right of course! I was prepared to offer $900 & then just wait it out. I figure he would either take it just to get rid of it or make me watch it rot for awhile longer. JUST SUCH A WASTE. Especially since the extra 4' of the Oday would be nice for my two growing teenage boys.

Thanks again

I'd pass on that as well, there are some nice deals out there that need little or no work.

O'Day built most of their 22s with stubby keels. They were nice little cruising boats but they lacked a good upwind sailing ability. Then they came out with some keel/centerboard O'Day 22s that were super sailboats. If this boat has a keel/centerboard, I would scoop it up in a minute. If not, I would pass it up.
