I have to replace the engine mount on an O'DAY 22, 1975, so that she can handle a Yamaha 4 stroke 8 HP. The idea is to use the 4 spring mount from Catalina Direct (SKU 2275). I am thinking of using a stainless steel back plate inside. The question is what to do outside to have the mount properly positioned perpendicular to the axle of the boat. Anybody went down that route? Pls help. I am in love with that boat and want to give her the best motor, a $2000+ investment I do not want to see on the ocean bottom together with a piece of my transom.

My O'Day 25

I went through a similar process on my O'Day 25, but I kept the old motor, and just replaced the brackets. They had become very loose, and no longer had any spring. I used the existing "wedge" to maintain the correct angle. I was going to rebuild it, but when I took it off, there was no rot or apparent problems, so I just reused it. However, the mounting bolts for the new bracket were wider, so I had to build an add-on plate. I wrapped a piece of 1/2" wood of several layers of fiberglass for that. I didn't use a SS plate, but added extra wood backing to the transom, and fiberglassed it in. I also overdrilled all of the holes, and filled them in with epoxy, then drilled the proper size. It's been working great for me, but it's only been a few months. No guarantee that the motor and transom WON'T end up on the bottom, but I don't think it will. Short answer is, if your boat was like mine, it should have a wedge that you can either reuse, or use for a pattern for a new one.

ENGINE MOUNT WEDGE

Thanks so much for your insight. My wedge I guess will be too small to accomodate my larger mount. By the way what is your wedge made of? I want to plan ahead before I take it off and try to come up with a replacement.

Wedge Size

My wedge appeared to be made either of solid epoxy, or wood covered with epoxy and glass. I'm not sure which, since I didn't have to drill any more holes. Actually, the way I did it may work for you as well. I'll try to take a pic in the next couple of weeks or so, but here's a basic ascii diagream: ----| ---| --| Since my new bracket needed a bigger plate, I added the following: |-| ----|| | ---|| | --|| | |-| I then lined up the plate, and drilled holes to through-bolt it to the wedge. These bolts completely replaced the old through-bolts, so were 3-4 inches longer than the original (I couldn't find SS bolts locally, so I used galvanized for now, but I'll change them out later). I also drilled new holes in the plate, the mate up with the new bracket. This meant I could put on a larger bracket, but still use the old (undamaged) wedge. All that said, had my wedge been rotted at all, I would have made a new one. Even if you decide to make a new wedge to accomodate the larger bracket, you can still use the old one as a template. Same angles and all, just bigger. So, this: ----| ---| --| would become this: ------| -----| ----| ---| --| That should still match the angle of your transom.

Ignore the ascii pics below

Well, THAT didn't work at all. Apparently, the program strips out blanks spaces. I'll take pictures on Thursday, when I go out again, and post them here.

Engine Mount

Hi DELAITRE: I replaced my mount and the wedge completely. The wedge on my 1979 22 foot O'Day was a fiberglass shell, open to the backside, stuffed with waterlogged wood. I removed the wedge to expose the transom beneath, and filled the holes. I then drilled new holes and installed a 3/4 inch marine ply mounting bracket inside the hull behind the new bracket location, and set it into lots of adhesive. The transom back there has a slight curve. The new mount was a Gareleck heavy duty mount that had adaptor for boats with reverse counter transoms like the O'Day. The Catalina mount is similar but may not have that ability. The wdege mount on the O'Day cannot accomodate anything larger than the single arm motor mounts. Your 8 HP - 4 stroke needs a heavier type mount for it's weight rating. I have a 10 HP 2 -stroke on mine and it works fine. If you want pictures sent, please email me directly at the following address, and I'll return photos to you. mitshu@juno.com If you're worried about losing your investment to the deep, simply have a chain looped around the motor handle that connects to a point on the hull or to a strong point near the bracket. That way, if something gives, you havae a means to at least keep the motor attached to the boat. Happy Sailing! Stu "Karakahl" 1979 O'Day 22 CB Centerport, NY
