Mine (a '73) is a bi-fold door that swings in (toward the bow) and folds in half while open (if you can picture that). It is hinged on the center post. It's not in very good shape and I never use it - I don't even know if this is the original door or not. I can get some pics of it and post them tomorrow.

Come on Ken! I'm dying to see what they look like. I'm planning on building some new pen boards for my boat.

Here they are. I took these with my phone and could not get far enough away to fit the whoke door in a singke shot - so I just took a bunch of them.

I have more but I think that shows whats going on.

The door material is pretty thin. I'd say 1/4 inch ply with a veneer.

Thanks Ken for posting them. I have plywood pen boards right now and I'd like to get away from using plywood on my new set of boards,

I concer. I plan on replacing the entire plywood bulkhead with solid wood. What species are you going to use?

I really haven't decided on what to use yet Ken. I'm going to check with a friend of mine who does cabinet work for a living and has done a lot of work on his O'Day 30.

Could you please give me dimensions of the width of each panel of your doors? I want to install some on my 1978 22. Mine has the cut out on the cabin sole at the porta-potti but no doors
Thanks jowaterm3@aol.com

In thinking about it, not sure my dimensions will do you any good. Each door half needs to be about 1/2 the rough opening width, allowing for a small amount of hinge space. On mine the end panel overlaps the starboard bulkhead when closed - don't know if that's original or not, but it ensures there is no 'peephole' on that end.

The door could be designed any number of ways - I may look into doing a sliding door instead of a bi fold.

Ami342, I'm in the process of refinishing mine. The doors from my 1980, 22 footer are 8 5/8 wide.

My doors were in decent shape so I stripped stained and varnished. You can see a few spots were I was a bit to aggressive and sanded below the thin veneer finish. No big deal, the doors will be behind the port bunk 99 percent of the time.

Thanks for the info. Yours look like the rest of the interior woodwork in my '78. Now if I can figure what wood to use that will not warp??

Plywood is dimensionally stable and should not warp. I'd use okoume, or if you wanted to get fancy and spendy, sapele. Get BS1088 rated if you can, it will have more plies and fewer voids. These types of wood are probably easier to find than teak. A friend recently bought some teak for the bulkhead in his Precision 23, and it was quite expensive. Less expensive than buying a bulkhead from Precision Boatworks, but still. Regular old fir plywood from the big orange or blue box stores will check and look bad, even if you coated with epoxy.

Brian, I wrote a reply but don't think it went out -- Thanks for the wood type and rating # I want the doors to look like my re stained and varnished bulkheads so I'll need close grained, bare wood. Wish I could buy partial sheets. I'll try some of the boat yards at Port Canaveral, Fl 10 minutes form home
Thanks again, John (ami 342)
