Does anyone know if a boarding ladder is made for a 22' O'Day? It has a forward sloping transom so a regular boarding ladder will not work. The ladder has to open farther than 180 degrees.

Thanks for the pictures. When the ladder is opened are the rungs vertical or do they follow the angle of the transom?

The bottom supports are cut down to reduce the angle and the hinge allows the steps to hang nearly vertical. You might see that in the photo below. The main purpose for installing a transom ladder is for safety. If I'm alone and fall in, I can get back in the boat unassisted. I also have a removable swim ladder with 4 steps that can be used for swimming.

I used my ladder in deep water yesterday for the first time. I did a ‘man overboard drill’ to see if I could get back in the boat unassisted. I did it. With the waves rocking the boat it’s a little tricky. I found that I could easily grab the ladder and put me both knees on the bottom rung and then reach up and grab onto the transom. From that position I was able to step one foot on the lower rung and pull myself up, step up to the upper rung and then in. You will no doubt want to do the same drill to see what might be needed to make it easier.

my railmaker ladder has four steps. i am able to put my left foot on the ladder with my body 30-40 degrees off center towards the rudder. i then pull myself to center over the ladder while move up out of the water. you might try this technique, assuming this explaination makes any sense to you.

It makes sense to me; I'll have another 'drill' and try your method. I was thinking that it would be best to do these drills with rough water conditions because that when you’re most likely to fall in. Maybe I’m over thinking this, but I was surprised by how difficult it was to get on the ladder when the boat is rocking in the waves.

Found this ladder at Bacon's in Annapolis. They are a great source for used parts and sails. www.baconsails.com They take consignments. This ladder needed refinishing and didn't look this nice when I bought it, but for $79.00 i dare you to find a better deal! The ladder hangs, folded up, on a couple of brackets I mounted to the transom while sailing. When docked, I store the ladder in the cabin for safe keeping. And it looks great.
