Oday 20 Mpls
Hello, I bought a 1978 Oday 20 last year. When trying to raise the jib, I found that i could raise it fine, but lowering it was an issue. The halyard would slip to the side of the pulley and get jammed between the block and the mast and not allow you to lower the jib without a lot of trouble. No matter which way I twisted the rope, it didn't help. We lived with it for the end of last season, but now I am trying to figure out what to do before lanching this year.
With the mast down, the pulley spins freely, doesn't have any nicks or cracks and seems perfectly fine. I was planning on replacing it assuming that it should fix the issue. Now that I am looking at pulleys, I am wondering if the line is way too large for the jib halyard. I have to go off of memory since the boat is stored away from my house, but I am pretty sure the jib halyard was thicker than the main halyard and maybe a 3/8" or even 7/16" diameter line. Does anyone know what size the jib halyard should be? It just seems larger than it needs to be.

Thanks.

Both the Main halyard and the Jib halyard on my 86 O'Day 222 are 5/16" STA-Set X braid. I had made the mistake of buying thicker halyards years ago and always had problems raising and lowering my sails. I finally replaced them about a year ago with 5/16" at D & R Marine which is about 7 miles from where I live. http://www.drmarine.com/ The guy who owns and runs the store knows O'Days inside and out and he also has all the parts you need. I got a better deal on halyards from him than I could have got from West Marine. If your Jib halyard sheave block is stock on your mast, he should be able to get you the right size and length halyards for your boat. Give him a call.

Thank you, Joe, I appreciate it.
I'm assuming that your Mainsail has sail slides on the luff of the sail which makes raising/lowering very easy with the proper size halyard. To make it real fast, add a couple of drops of liquid dish washing detergent to each sail slide. I started doing this last year and my sail comes right down fast when I let the halyard off. Eventually a good rain will wash the sail track out nice and clean and you can repeat the process over again as needed.

Smooth Sailing!
Joe
