I have recently purchased a 1977 O'Day 20. It sails great but it needs somw TLC. To start the vinyl covered foam on the interior is in bad shape and needs to be replaced or removed and something else put in its place. Has anyone else had to do this? What did you do? Where can I buy the stuff I need? Thanks! Stormy

i have an oday 20 with the same problem. i plan on stripping the old vinyl covering off, scraping the glue, and then just paint the fiberglass. i will probably use a light tan color so if i get any leaks they won't be as noticeable since leaks usually leave a brown streak. i haven't decided what paint to use yet. i was thinking of an epoxy paint. i will need to put a fan(s) in the doorway and maybe wear a respirator, depending on the paint i end up using. i would be interested in any suggestions on the best paint to use.

The scraping and painting is an option I have also considered. What about removing the old stuff and gluing in some indoor outdoor carpet? Anyone have an idea what type of adheisive to use? Skip

I don't know exactly what was used for the OD 20 interior, but my 86 O'Day 222 has a carpet interior which is pretty nice to the touch. The one thing that I'd really be concerned with is condensation or moisture in the cabin which can lead to mildew. Could it possibly be that they used this foam as a barrier for this? I had talked to Rudy Nickerson about what they used for a paint in the bilge, and he said that they used a regular rubberized latex paint. It may be worth your while to give Rudy a call at D&R Marine and ask him about this. Maybe he can recommend a product that you can use, or give you a better idea on what would be needed.

We also had the tan burlap that was falling off the inside . I pulled it off and used a water based adhesive to glue outdoor carpeting back on.A thick stiff scrub brush took the remaining original adhesive off. The whole project went fairly quickly and was extremely cost effective.The boat is warmer in cooler temp's and cooler in hot temp's .It's also quieter for the person trying to sleep .We used a light blue to keep the iside brighter.
