On my new to me 1974 O'Day 20 the centerboard does not fully retract into the keel so that the centerboard is flush with (or hidden inside) the bottom of the keel. When fully retracted the centerboard hangs down about 1" below the keel at the rear end. When the boat is on the trailer, all the weight is supported on the bunks with no weight placed on the keel.
The width of the centerboard is about 9.5" which appears to a little more than the depth of the keel slot.
My questions are: 1) Is this the way the O'Day 20 is designed so that the keel does not fully retract? and 2) Can all the weight of the boat be carried on the bunks when trailering without causing damage to the hull? Is support on the keel essential?
The reason I ask is because I would like to adapt my trailer so that some weight is carried on the keel, but I would not want the centerboard supporting the weight of the boat. It would most likely cause damage to the centerboard.
