Hello.. I just got my first sailboat, an O'Day 19 (1984), and I have no boom vang.. I've Googled for days and can't figure out if I was supposed to have one or not.

Speaking of "booming", the dropdown center board does a fair amount of clonking around.. is that common to those types of center boards?

Thanks for tolerating a "newbie"! Appreciate your input!

I would say that the boom-vang was optional in 1984, but I would certainly add one based on my experiences using one on my various boats. Your best bet might be to call Rudy at D&R Marine, he sells O'DAY parts and can set you up with a good boom-vang. (508) 644-3001 or www.drmarine.com You can certainly buy one elsewhare, WEST Marine sells them as do most good sailing stores, DWYER Aluminum Masts sells a good one that I have on my DS II.

The CB will bang a bit when you are not sailing, or if sailing downwind, since there is little sideways force under those conditions. I raise mine up most of the way when moored and leave it about 1/3 to 1/2 way down when powering to provide more directional control without causing it to clunk or bang.

As to being a "newbie", hey, we were all there at one time!

Hello and welcome to this forum.I also have a '19.The vang was one of the first things I added.I bought a Garhauer from mauri: http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Garhauer/images/pi/GAH30UAB41_F.jpg
My board also bangs around a bit so I replaced the pivot pin.The old pin was only slightly worn and I don't recomend replacing yours.I think they are just a little sloppy.Nothing to worry about.Good luck with your 19!

The consensus on a Precision forum (the 18, 21, and 23 all have keel/CB combos like O'days) is that most folks pull the board up while docked, so that the board doesn't flap around and clunk. Leaving it down might make the boat a little more sea kindly, but also might wear things more.

Brian, with a K/CB boat like your 192 I would most likely raise the CB up flush while moored, since the keel provides some resistance to yawing, but on my DS II she would be sailing back and forth in the wind on the mooring if I didn't leave the CB down slightly (it sticks down maybe 9"-12" and I tie off both up and down pendants to hold it) it might bump a little (very little!) at rest, but so far I haven't noticed any problems after 16 seasons of doing that. I thought that I had a picture, but can't find it at the moment.
