My swing keel comes up if I get up any speed at all. Frequently have to hold lever down with my foot. Any suggestions? Also considering a set of new sails and want them to reef as well as maybe getting a spinnaker. Whatcha think?
I had a 68 17 ftr. and I had a similar problem especially sailing downwind . Downwind I let it be , however upwind I would also push it back down . My boat had a small lever to catch the handle which had a tab on it . You can engage that lever if it stil exists on your boat. Call Rudy at d&r marine he will be able to help you if you need a new one .I seem to remember the handle and the lever were made of brass? which was bent I had some trouble with that too.
This is a pretty easy fix. Get a new center board gasket from Alan Jones (ncproductions-at-qwest.net replace the -at- with @) or from DR Marine. When you replace it, rub a bit of vaseline on both sides and then tighten down the triangle plate. When you are working on the boat make a habit of tightening the screws on that plate and it should work much better. I believe those gaskets should be replaced once ever two or three years, so get a couple.
