Oday 15 mfg#??

Well here we go, post #1!!

I am looking to buy my first sailboat, I am going to look at an Oday 15 and was curious to know if there are any ways to tell if it is a -1 or -2 ?? I would prefer the -2, it seems to have a more stable design, and I will be sailing with the kids and wife. Is there a way to tell by the VIN? or tag??

Any response would be greatly appreciated

Well, I assume that by "-1 or -2" you are referring to the difference between the early 1970's model and the early 1980's model 15.

Since they look nothing alike (other than both being sloop-rigged and built by O'DAY) telling them apart won't be hard. (I'll post pictures)

If the O'DAY 15 that you are looking at does not have a HIN, but does have a small metal plate in the cockpit with 2 numbers on it (Hull# and Class#), then she is a 1970-72 model. If she does have a HIN (example: XDYV0159M82F), the boat is a 1973 or later model, check the last 2 numbers in the 12-digit HIN, a 1973 model will end with "73" ,an 1981 model will end with 81x where "x" will be a letter between A and L that designates what month of that model year the boat was built. (Model year ran Aug to Jul, for example: 1981 model year ran Aug 1980 to Jul 1981).

!970's O 15 had a pivoting centerboard, 1980's O15 had a dagger-board (slides vertically up and down through slot in boat). 1980's version usually had a roller-furling jib, 1970's one didn't (although, perhaps as an option).
1980's model was pretty much all cockpit, just a small deck at the bow, 1970's model had a smaller cockpit, seating was on the side-decks not down inside cockpit. There was a deck from the bow almost to the mast, and a deck that extended about 2' forward of the stern.
