I've owned a much larger boat, sailed the waters of Chesapeake Bay, Florida Keys, BVI, but yesterday was just about as good as it gets. My wife and I spent the afternoon sailing our H23.5 at Cave Run Lake near Morehead, Kentucky. A bit overcast sky, but a very steady wind coming from the east allowed us to begin our "cruise" sailing upwind and like all gentlemen sailors are supposed to do, come home downwind.

We shared the lake with a couple of fishermen, no Skeedoos, wake boards. The trees were firing beautifully and we were having a ball. Our gourmet lunch from Subway was eaten while we relaxed under a beam reach. It was a lovely day.

I guess my point here is that big boats are great and you can certainly enjoy extended cruises in comfort on them, but as far as the pure joy of sailing, it doesn't require 35 feet of fiberglass to have a wonderful time. I realize I'm preaching to the choir here, but here's to us, the sailors without hassles group!

Stop these agonizing posts! :) I'm jealous - the lake I'm on is owned by the power company, and they lowered the level about 6 ft more than normal over the last 3 weeks or so, to do maintenance on the dam feeding the power plant. Most all launch ramps are now exposed, and since I have about 2.5 ft draft, plus the height of the trailer bed, I needed to haul in mid Sept to make sure I could do it before winter. I've lost out on at least 4 or 5 beautiful days.

I'm Jealous Too

I sail on Cave Run too and I can't even manage the time to get there to go for a sail. You retired folks aren't playing fair. LOL.

Yesterday on the North Shore, we sailed the 27 foot catamaran which is mostly a day sailor.. It was a really fine day out on Lake Pontchartrain. We had a high overcast which really kept things cool and north wind that started at about 6 kts then later grew to 12-15.. No waves because of no fetch.. Outstanding to feel the cat accelerate from 5 kt to over 10 kt when the wind puffed up..Interesting how much different setting sails is on that thing compared to a larger monohull.. Fun new stuff to learn.. Had a friend on board who'd never been on a sailboat.. I think he was amazed at how much territory we covered while we were just messing about enjoying the day.. Best sailing time on the Pontchartrain is Sept/Oct/Nov.. then Feb/Mar/april/May.. Yesterday was the kind of day when I used to look out of my office window and know I was missing some fine sailing.. Now that I am retired, I can get out there ! I love it.

I haven't been able to sail since June. The lake level here is now at an "all-time" low. Down 15 ft. So, yeah! rub it in!!! :naughty:

Your the man Bill. I sailed last Sunday with our lake 6' down. I sailed to the harbor at Rockwall to take my lady to dinner. I entered the harbor as usual and ran aground. I put the swim ladder out. changed into my swim suit and stepped into the lake. Just above my waist line. I walked around my h23 turned the bow and pushed it off.
Back in the boat. started the engine and docked on the outside dock. Had dinner as planned. Then had to motor back to the marina. Channel 4 news was doing a feature on the hit and miss rain we had Sunday. My 1 second of fame . We are at the end and then tying up over the guys shoulder. http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/100911-Rain-Hit-or-Miss-Across-Metroplex

The Chesapeake Bay will be on fire with the bright colors over the next two weeks. I plan on taking time off, catch a few of those vacation days left over, before I loose them. I know I come back to work relaxed and unbothered. That is why sailing is good for the soul! To be as one with the wind.

After spending a lifetime sailing/racing/broiling in the summer heat of the tropics (like most rabid sailors down here) my dermatologist(and the admiral) insist that I scale my sailing season back to Oct-May so I just re-launched. Unlike some, I found most northern sailors summer stories to be an encouragement in my off season and with no real foliage change(it's all white sand and palm trees here) I say thanks for the image of a KY lake sail in full color too.

Klodies cat tale really sparks my interest. I assume it's a Stilletto of which we have many around here due to their old mfg site being just down the street. Great boat. I'd love one but alas, no bimini for my well broiled Irish hide;). I knew those guys back in the 80's when they were making the orig molds. Very grass roots but way ahead of their time.

I occasionally get four-foot-itis when I look through the sailing mags or around the marina but have to agree with Bill about there being something special in keeping it simple. It's a tale I hear very often from long time sailors who've scaled up, only to loose the simplicity that drew them to sailing. A very wise old sailor convinced me early on to buy what you'll sail the most and charter for the rare occasion when you have time for a bigger boat. Sage advice for us.

Thanks again for the stories, Mike

After a long spring flood followed by a brutally hot summer here, fall IS our sailing season this year!

Still, with the fall colors and a good breeze it can be a very rewarding one.

We went this weekend on what was supposed to be an overnight trip. Ended up turning around when we had to sail into a 15-20kt wind, 4-6' waves, against the current. We actually got blown backwards about 3/4 miles. After getting beat to death for about 45 minutes we decided to turn back to calmer waters.

Plenty of wind in the river for the ride home. Moved at a steady 5-6kts the whole way.

Here's my kid playing Captain eating a chicken finger.

Had a wonderful afternoon sail today. Steady breeze, river in the best shape of the year, temperature just fine with a light jacket or sweater. You can see the fall colors starting in the background, along with a barge tow.

Spring flood lasted way too long, and the summer was brutally hot -- we're getting our sailing fix from mid September through mid November, when we'll have to haul her out for the winter.
