I'm doing some planning for an upcoming trip in 2 weeks to catalina and I was thinking about stopping in oceanside to break up the up-hill ride. BUT, I live in phoenix and my charts are on my boat in San Diego. Can someone tell me how many NM from oceanside to avalon?

Consider Dana Point
or Newport also. Newport is a pain to get into or out, very busy. Dana is my home port & one of the prettiest in So. Calif, if I do say so myself. Visitor slips are available and there are two areas you can anchor for 72 hrs. that are inside the breakwater. Also you can check maps online at www.maptech.com choose "online maps" from menu at top.

Oceanside To Avalon
My charts measure 50 NM for Oceanside to Avalon. Oceanside is almost exactly half way from SD and makes a great place to stop overnight. Ask the harbor department for a slip in front of Jolly Roger Restaurant and you can walk up the ramp to dinner and watch your boat while eating. Have fun.

Not far enough North
I made this trip in July of 2001. You need to get as far north as Dana Point and then you may still do a lot of motoring. Oceanside is a great place to stop for the night and the Jolly Roger has good food. The good news is that you will probably be able to sail straight back to SD afterwords.
