There was a thread recently on rec.boats.cruising about shipping a boat overseas on a float-on/float-off carrier. There are several of these that carry yachts to and from the Med and Caribbean and in the Pacific too. But the impression was that only megayachts travel that way and only megayacht owners could afford the price. So I checked them out. The tariff for a sailboat in the 35 foot to 40 foot range is $7,500 from Newport, RI, to Cherbourg, France. For a similar sized motor yacht it's $12,000. At first glance that looks like a lot of money but it's actually a bargain. A friend left his boat (Pearson Triton)in the Canaries last year and had to hire a delivery crew to bring it home. First quote he got was $17,000. I think he finally got the job done for $7,000. But that's only the fee. There are many other charges not to mention wear and tear on the boat and the general hazards of the sea. So if all you want to do is get to the other side of the pond and not undertake a sailing adventure, the transport makes excellent sense on every level. Unfortunately, the carrier does not stop in the Canaries. See the link.

Live aboard

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can live aboard as they transport you boat (if you have the time and so desire). At least I think thats what the article I read said. I can't remember what mag I read but it had an article about the deal.

Transatlantic

Peter I looked at the site linked and it is about transport from Florida to mediterranean sea . Could you give me the infos that you found on Newport RI to Cherbourg ??? If you add the cost of all the equipement necessary to make a safe crossing on a 40 foot sailboat it is largely over $7,500.00 ( ocan radio - raft - PiRB - radar ) and at least 20 days of vacation Thanks www.thefrencha@aol.com

I recomend it 100%

I had my B361 shipped from the south of France, (see picture of IPANEMA at Le Lavandou ) to Fort Lauderdale using that service in Nov 2000. It cost me $10K but that was a lot cheaper than sending it as cargo (need to take down the stick and pay for loading and unloading fees and put the boat back together). I did not have the time to come with her, but live aboard crew transport and food was included. Although my boat was the only small boat on board, and was accompanied by several Mega Yachts, it was allowed on board and arrived in perfect shape. On a side note, it arrived exactly the day of my birthday, what a present !!!!. I was impressed that all I had to do at port FtLauderdale was to pick up the keys from the ship’s captain and motor away into Peer 66. I believe that for a small boat this is the best transport solution short of sailing her across the pond. Paying a delivery Captain was a lot more at that time and would have resulted in additional wear of the boat. I recommend this solution, and even more now that the cost appears to have further dropped since 2000.

No liveaboard

The owner is permitted to have one person stay with the boat if the vessel is larger than eighty feet. Smaller boats no people. Water and power will be supplied to large vessels (over 80') at an additional charge. No free ride.

Newport to Cherbourg

It's there on the site. You just have to dig for it. I think there are two voyages scheduled for this year, one in April and the other in late July. It may be that these are legs of voyages originating in the Caribbean.
