We are planning a trip from Cape May NJ to OC, MD this summer... i was poking around on google maps and i don't see what appears to be any large marinas or areas to drop anchor and overnight on the Island itself..

Anyone have local knowledge of where's a good place to drop a hook and dinghy in or tie up and spend the night? We'd like to hit the beach and shops and restaurants while there..

thanks.

There is a fairly new marina, The Sunset Marina I believe it was called, in the back bay. The Beneteau Club was there last June as part of a DelMarVa circle. It was too new to be on my chart plotter or the paper charts we had. It was cut out of the land then flooded to fill it. Just go straight in the channel towards the west shore and it will become apparent where it is. Big marina, nice restaurant on the waterfront and several others within walking distance, plus all the usual marina amenities. You can walk to the shuttle that takes you to downtown O.C..

You must be one of about 6 sailors that call Cape May home. One visit to West Marine confirms that! I've visited Cape May every year for about 40 years; my father is a local artist. We've sailed up to visit 9 of those times.

I have found the area north of the inlet to be crazy and subject to wakes and partyers. I've anchored a bit to south, in the channel going to Chincoteague and been happier.

I've stayed at the White Marlin a few times. There is little to recommend it if someone offers a better choice.

There is some stuff on my blog, below, too.

The inlet at OC can be trouble if there is an on-shore swell and you will find it more relaxing at slack high tide. You might also consider Chincoteague at some point. With your boat and draft you would have no troubles.
