I recently purchased Trident 101 white sanitation hose to replace the 8 year old hose on my J/120. I'm not sure who made the original hose, but it's white vinyl with an internal reinforcement. The Trident hose is much heavier. I'd guess it's twice the weight of the original hose I'm replacing. For a 35 foot length, the Trident is probably 40 pounds. Always concerned with weight onboard, this hose seems heavy, but perhaps that's the price you pay for an odor free sanitation system. The second observation is the chemical odor that is released by the hose. I've opened the shipping box and haven't installed the hose yet and the chemical manufacturing smell is very strong. Does anyone here have any experience with this hose that can provide some estimates of time for the chemical smell to go away? Does it go away? I'd rather not install the new hose with the current level of odor.

The odor is probably the plasticizers in the hose evaporating off. It probably is much stronger in the box than it would be on the boat, since the box is concentrating the odors... As the hose ages, the amount of plasticizers it gives off decreases... I doubt you'll even notice it on your boat however, since the hose will have enough air flow around it to prevent the odor from building up to the level it is in the shipping box.

Take the hose out of the box

and clean it, maybe even wax it. It'll look great when installed :)

I did not notice any significant smell. The hose is very stiff and tough to work with. I sure hope it's worth the effort long term!

working with stiff hose

is considerably easier is you keep a pot of hot water on the stove as you're working and dip the end of the hose in hot water just before sliding it onto the fittings.

I did this with mine and it worked great. The water was not anywhere near boiling since I was concerned about damaging the hose. After just a couple of minutes in the hot water the hose softened up and was easy to stretch over the plumbing fittings.

I am curious what type of boat you have (or sailing you do) that would make the weight of this hose a factor. I'm thinking you must be one of those racers who make the crew cut the handles off of their toothbrushes for an overnight race. :D
