Stopped off at the local Catalina dealer to buy some Universal Engine Parts, filters, pump impeller etc. and the guy behind the counter made an interesting comment. When I ordered the Oberdorfer replacement impeller and gasket he told me to "make sure I do not replace the snap ring when putting the pump back together". According to him it is only there during shipping to keep everything in place, but should not be kept in place during normal use. I have had mechanics replace the impeller, and I have replaced it myself during regular service. Has anybody ever heard of this? he added not to worry that the impeller would not come off of the shaft, and in fact having the snap ring present could "score" the shaft.

Nope, but it depends on how old your pump is

because the ring works with the much older indented shaft, but may (repeat MAY) not be necessary with the newer (post 1986 when we got ours) extended shaft. Why bother? Put it on. You have NOTHING to lose.

If your engine uses the Oberdorfer water pump

model 202 or similar that has a grease cap fitting attached, you can now get a replacement water pump that uses packless bearings for the shaft instead of the grease fitting. Moyer Marine also sells the snap ring as well. I am not convinced that the snap ring is essential as the impeller is kept within the pump assembly and the shaft is beveled to make it turn. The snap ring may only insure that the impeller does not slide around on the shaft. The shaft itself is not secured in its slot and can move (a tiny bit perhaps) possibly causing impeller wear. I try to use the snap ring just because it is there. I hope that the link below takes you to the moyermarine.com water pump parts page, but if it does not you should be able to find it yourself. They are a tad more expensive than an auto parts store but they know marine engines quite well.

I didn't think that my link would fit so ...

http://www.moyermarine.com/catalog.htm scroll down to 'cooling system', then 'pump parts'

Pump impeller

Thanks for the replies, however I should have specified which engine. It is not the Atomic 4, but a Universal M25XP.

Chief, go to marinedieseldirect.com

and look at the exploded view of the pump. So what's so hard? Put the ring on and be done with it.

Snap Ring

You just don't get it do you. Of all the people who respond to posts on this list you have the worst attitude of anyone. You must be the smartest person in the world, as you are so sure of everything you write. I have been deling with this gentleman for years, and he hs ever given me a bad piece of advise. I was just throwing it out there to see if anyone had ever heard of not using the snap ring. Again, according to him it could cause more damage by using it as not placing it back on. I have always replaced it when changing the impeller. I stopped posting for months because you always chime in with such negative comments or your stock answer "check the archives". The old saying "if you have nothing nice to say, dont't say anything". You are not obligated to respod to every post. If you think it is a stupid question, just keep on reading. Not all of us are as smart as you.
