My old Honda 4-stroke 100 (9.9hp?)w/long shaft is wonderful for cruising, though a bit heavy when mounting and unmounting, and probably reduces max sailing speed a tad. For all around use, about a 7.5 long-shaft may be ideal. Just a note, if you ever intend to race in a Catalina regatta, their national rules call for at least a 4hp w/combined motor and tank weight of at least 40 lbs.

There are many outboard motors out there that meet the needs of the 22. Different conditions will warent different motors, If boating in an area where tidal changes or swift currents are a factor, a large motor is recomended...to note the 9.9...its the same motor as the 15 but has been detuned to comply with many lake standards where a max of 10 is allowed.... For racing I often use an electric 35 lb thrust trolling motor to get me out of the marina to open water.... As for the rules of the 22 Catalina Association.......that organization is almost dead anyway with only a hand full of disorganized races each year, claiming one design, with over 4 different keel designs, three hull changes, 5 deck changes and and a wieght difference from hull 001s to the 16,000s in the hundreds of lbs....
