O26 Centerboard Assembly

I think either my tube is leaking or the retainer bolts are loose/missing/damaged. I'm taking on about 5 gallons per day at the rear of the bilge and no noticeable fiberglass damage. I'm going to do a short haul to repair (I will be in the sling for 1 hour only) and want to be prepared to: Change the pendant, hose and screws and evaluate the pivot and replace in fall if needed. The 2 questions are:

1. What is the ID and type of rubber hose?
2. What are the screws 1/4 x 20 x how long and how are they sealed?

  • If memory serves me correctly, the 1/4-20 bolts on my ODay 25 are 1.25". I think i installed 1.5" without feeling any resistance
  • I suggest a strap around the boat to hold the centerboard in place for when you remove the plate and screws. The centerboard weighs around 50-70lbs and could take a while to get everything into place. The wedges on mine were put in place with 4200. Whomever installed it last probably used that to hold them in place just long enough to get the plate on
  • Use 4200 to seal the bolts
  • Check your bilge for any potential leaks such as a bilge pump screwed into it
  • While your boat is in the sling check the trunk for cracks
  • I hate to burst your bubble but I doubt you'll be able to do all of your proposed tasks in only an hour. Can they leave your boat in the slings over night?
  • Do you have an outboard or Saildrive? Saildrives seals are known to wear out over time and the aft end of the boat drains into the bilge
  • How many below water through hulls do you have?
  • I'm not sure how cold your winters are but if water is in your keel, it can crack. Drill some holes in it before winter layup to let it drain. You'd be surprised at how long water can sit in a sealed keel. Filling them in in the spring isn't terribly hard when done with a syringe
  • What year is your O'Day? I know some of the older 25's had a wire or partial wire pendant while later ones were all rope
