I am looking for information and maybe photos of the bowsprits put onto later Irwin 37' sailboats. I have just bought one, it is a 74 model with no bowsprit and I am looking to but a used aliminum one or to have one fabricated, I just canno find any info on them. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks Ryan

bowsprit replacement

I had to replace the sprit on my 1988 38' CC Mark. However I had the old sprit to use as a template. I had the new one made of stainless this time, not aluminium. May be overkill, but it's strong. I had to remake the deck for the top also. The plywood rotted,so I used Brazilian Walnut. Much stronger than teak--more overkill? I had it on hand is why. I don't think I have any photos. I could answer questions, though. Don't forget about the angle upwards to match the angle of the shear of the deck and cap rail. Gaer

give a good welder a try

My IRWIN 37 IS A '76 model and the bowsprit is made out of wood and glss. The newer models are made of aluminum tubing. I suspect stainless would work too. I had the opportunity to watch a welder do his thing on another boat, a 125'er, and I was impressed. I am positive he could make me a new bowsprit out of stainless, but would use the old one for a template. Your problem isw you have no template. So, call all the marinas in your area, or email them and ask "Do you have any Irwin 37's or 38's in your yard?" Chancews are they might, or will know where to locate one. In the event you cannot find anything, email me at tho52mas@netscape.net as there are two where I store my boat for the winter, and they have one glass (mine) and one aluminum (Woolly Bear). I can go down and get some rough measurements.
